I'm wondering if he thinks he can parlay these 1 year deals into draft picks at the trade deadline.

The one year deals for Fischer and Gostibehere I can sort of understand. But Gost in particular seemed too pricey, and might be tough to move at the deadline. These longer term ones seem a bit on the expensive side. If Compher is more the player he was last year and gets second line ice time he might come close to getting some rdturn on this deal. Might have been better off to use his cap space to take other contracts back for nothing with one or two years left.

I think Yzerman is just fielding a team while his prospects cook in the minors. At some point soon, though, his rebuild is going to have to start showing progress.

With retention Gostibehere is a $2M defenseman. There will be a buyer.

This is exactly what I'm seeing. Plus the cap isn't an issue for them and they have a lot of contracts with 1-2 years left. I think the longer contracts were done because it would be difficult to juggle turning over most of the roster in a couple years and still keep some fans in the seats. Copp is a Michigan guy, which may help with that too.
