I don't mind the trade, I would have expected the pick to be a 2nd rounder given Toffoli's resume and other recent trades. Acknowledging he may not have been willing to sign for longer but I am not as big a fan of the contract. If you're a believer in the guy and going to give him the platform to shine, bump the AAV and lock him down for another year or two. If you want a show me deal, should have gone for the one year term and made the 2 mil qualifying offer.
I get that they can re-sign him next summer but feels like all the upside is on the players side and this is the kind of term you give an older player.

Depends on what their plan is for the future prospects but I like this. If other guys emerge as more deserving it’s an expiring contract off the books. If he shows himself he’ll get paid. Can’t complain. Not a 7 year deal! Good in my books.

His agent has done the 2 year thing before with Gavrikov. They are banking on the increased salary cap when the contract is up to cash in.

$3 million + has pretty much been the going rate for players scoring 30+ points the last couple of years.
He likely would have gotten more in arbitration judging by the history of arbitration.
I see this deal as more Flames friendly than player friendly, but you could also call it market rate.

Zadorov being the team salesman... maybe they should keep him.

I guess the Flames had a clear idea of targeting this guy and signing him, but they also just don't want to be tied down in longer contracts. I don't really get what their plan is yet. Interested to see what they do with their next moves.

I know we want to complain about everything but taking a guy like this to UFA doesn't really matter. He's unlikely going to have team's lining up to sign him so if you offer him a fair deal - he will take it. It only matters for top end guys who know they will have teams chasing and offering big bucks.
Middle/low tier guys - they aren't going to UFA knowing they've got a 8M contract out there if they wait a week - so they sign if you want to keep them around at fair deal. The Flames don't really have similar contracts - but its like the Oilers and Yamamoto or Foegele - they are going to take a fair contract from the Oilers because they have no clue what they will get if they go to the market.

This is why I don't see the point in trading a decent trade chip like Toffoli for someone like this. You can find 3rd liners easily. Would have much rather seen them trade Toffoli for picks and just sign someone.

Sureloss says Meier just signed for $8.8 x 8. A fair bit of cabbage for a guy who hit (almost) PPG just once. Not much room for a big raise for Toffoli, especially with term.

I wonder if they just look at Toffoli as a 1 year rental at a decent salary. Wouldn't shock me if Toffoli ends his career as kind of a mercenary guy like Corey Perry taking short term deals with contenders as it will be difficult to get anything long term.

A reasonable 'show me' contract for both sides. Looking forward to seeing where he fits in.

This is true. Even if you have to buy him out, it’s 1/3 not 1/2.

Some people are actually upset about this contract eh? Huh.
Pretty simple, it’s a show me contract. They’re either going to extend him when they can or they’ll trade him for another asset. I’m not sure why there’s any angst over it.
I think he’s going to have a great year and become a fan favorite pretty quickly. He’ll have a burr under his saddle.

Very possible. This is his 5th team already. The fact he's not gotten NTCs in his two UFA deals says he doesn't mind a move.
