Hahaha perfect. Hopefully this is just the training wheels trade for Conroy but probably not chasing pure futures anyways. Oh well, hope for the best as always.

Any offer sheets signed now pull from 2024, not 2023.

One reason for an early trigger pull would be for the immediate cap space to be able to add salary right away, and the draft pick this weekend, since the new chap doesn’t have a contract counting against the cap until potential arbitration in a month or so.

Some of you are writing off someone that hasn’t even put on the ****ing jersey yet. And you wonder why we have players that don’t want to be here.
I too would have rather had a higher pick (maybe with retention), but I’m gonna reserve my judgement until I see what Sharangovich does.
Look at the bigger picture, this could open up doors for more NHL Russians to join Calgary. Or maybe we want to lock him up to a Dube-like deal. Additionally, this guy was heavily used for PK purposes and zero PP ice time. Had 4 SH points (2 goals, 2 assists), and zero PP points. Easy math for you, all of his points last season were ES. That puts in the perspective the point production drop. Acquiring Meier likely didn’t help with his usage either.

All the posters saying they should have held onto Toffoli till the deadline are missing the fact that the Flames would never have traded Toffoli at the deadline.
The Flames are always in the playoff mix, there is no way they would have traded Toffoli.
They would have held onto him and hope that they could make the playoffs.
Toffoli would have walked for nothing.
Yes, trade deadline value would be higher, but (1) Flames would never have traded Toffoli at the deadline and (2) you also take on the risk that Toffoli might get injured and can't get traded.
This trade is average, it's not great, it's not terrible. It only looks terrible because many posters on this board have been thinking that the Flames would be getting a 1st round pick in one of the deepest drafts in years for Toffoli. That was never going to happen. If a 1st round pick in 2023 was available, Conroy would have taken it.

There is maybe a little bit of upside looking at his 21-22 season. But it seems like a massive hope that he's got more upside than that. His overall points totals aren't amazing, even going back to the minors. Seems like he has some goal scoring ability. We'll see I guess. Doesn't look great at first glance.

I suspect someone would have surrendered a 2nd for Toffoli, but the team preferred to fill a roster spot and get a pick. This seems to be in line with what I imagined his value to be to the league. Because the Flames gave up a first and a prospect doesn’t mean that is today’s value. The Flames were one of the few teams with the MO of paying inflated values for aging players, and they are now allegedly out of that business, so guys in their 30s looking for a pay day have one less team seeking their services.
The deal doesn’t tilt the earth’s axis, but it does give the Flames a bit more roster flexibility entering next year (maybe important?) and does give them a future chip. Decent first deal for Conroy.
Good luck to Toffoli, he proved this doubter wrong.

The team got younger with a .5 point per game player and got a pick. Not terrible.

He averaged 33 goals and 32 assists for 65 points every 82 games over the past 3 seasons. So the 73 was not much of an outlier, close to what you could expect for Toffoli over 82 games given his recent track record.

Tbh, I’d rather gamble on younger players who haven’t quite hit their stride over veterans who are over the hill

Yet Conroy just said that he’s a great penalty killer.

A lot of people who said waiting past draft day would be a huge mistake no matter what the deals are now are complaining about the return. I doubt Conroy got superior offers and decided to take this guy.
The player? I have no idea what he is - haven’t watched him. They say he’s fast, a possession driver and has a shot. That seems like something Calgary has been missing. And he’s 25, but only barely, and he doesn’t have very many miles on him.
And Toffoli? Last year was a huge outlier, and a product of Sutter using him a ton, the power play being focused on him (to the exclusion of Lindholm and Huberdeau) and just a strange year. He’s normally a 50 point or so guy. He’s pretty slow and he’s 31. Everyone agrees it was time for him to go, including him.
Let’s pump the brakes on declaring this a failure.
