Default Let's Talk About Dishwashers

I'm in the market for a new dishwasher. The brands I have in mind are LG, Bosch, GE and Whirlpool. Is there a brand I should stay away from? Is there certain brands harder to find someone to fix if it breaks down? Let me know your thoughts and experiences.

My fiancé has a Bosch that she has been very happy with and I just got one as well because mine just died and it’s getting delivered soon.

Had a Bosch 7 or 800 and it was awesome on everything. Moved and now we have a Miele which I’d expect to be good also but it holds way less and the rack layouts and design are very inefficient. It does good at cleaning and is fairly quiet too though.

Samsung.

Your list of brands is fine, we've had a Bosch for the last two years and I have no complaints.

Out of your list, I’d only buy the Bosch.

When I moved into my house there was an old Maytag that looked like it had been there since the 80's. Still worked okay, had to rinse dishes first, but it was showing it's age and the plastic inside was discolouring. When I replaced it I bought a stainless interior Maytag and it's been humming away trouble free for about 15 years now, no dish rinsing required.

I appreciate everyone's responses. Maybe Sec 304 would lend me his wife (to wash dishes) from time to time.

I forgot to add Maytag to my list. I've read some decent things about their dishwashers.

Bosch always seems to be a favorite which might be the way to go.

I've had GE, Maytag, Samsung... a lot of the regulars. They were the most okay'iest dishwashers. They were fine.

The Miele I had in a previous home I had blew them all away... unfortunately that also includes price.

I had a brand new Samsung. It clogged in 1.5 years. Tried to get a tech to service it to no avail pre covid. In my desperation, somehow fixed it myself by bailing out the greasy water myself using pots and pans and then pouring more hot water inside and then bailing out the greasy water coming out of the pipes manually. From that point on, told everyone to rise everything and turn on tap until hot water before starting cycle. It worked fine for at least another 4-5 years after that, but it seemed weird that a new dishwasher needed that type of "babying" to function over a reasonable useful life.

Bosche and Miele on the other hand I believe there's a little bit of a pre-heat function designed into them. No issues so far with clogging without pre-rinsing etc. but certain things are obviously caked on (ie: scrambled eggs) if you don't do things right. I have a Bosch right now that I'm happy with which replaced an 18 year old Bosch where the spinning motor failed. Fixable, but for the price of repair, I just bought a new dishwasher.

I sorta agree that the layouts are kinda inefficient. But I think this is an issue with smaller sized models and cheaper models. The Miele and Bosch my friends and family have are slightly larger models and they have really cool things like the fully flat utensil rack on the top and racks that can push up and down in height.

But I'll also say that some of the complaints of the smaller units aren't necessarily true across the board. I can agree that there is only so much you can do with the vertical utensil baskets, but those can be removed and third party flat baskets for the top are potentially available. The top rank on some of the smaller ones can move a few inches in some models. So it's kind of a model by model basis for this complaint.

we have a jennair dishwasher. it sucks - you basically have to put clean dishes in and just use the dishwasher to sanitize them. it's also not very quiet.... oh... and expensive.

would not buy again

We had a Bosch for a short while and then sold it. We found it was laid out to handle a lot of plates or glasses- which is good. However we are a family where “everything goes in the dishwasher.” So once you start putting in pots, big bowls, etc- you end up wasting too much space.

We had to run it every day and sometimes twice per day. I could manage that but my wife hated it so we went back to Whirlpool.

The one mistake we made with the new whirlpool was getting one with a 3rd rack. Good idea on paper as it is a great place for knives, etc. but it cuts down on the height of the rack for glasses. So we ended up removing it.

Yeah- I know I’m weird. But hopefully that info helps you when you are looking.

I have personal experience with Bosch and Whirlpool. The Bosch was great, but the Whirlpool I have now is basically just as good and as quiet, but was about 25% cheaper.

Samsung are dreadful, I had one that lasted maybe 2 years, annoyingly failed just after the warranty ran out, replaced it with a Bosch and that has run like clockwork for over a decade now

We can fit the bento box style plastic containers we send the kid's lunches inside of into the the 3rd rack of our Bosch. Saves a ton of space for our "regular" dishes in the main section.

My last dishwasher was a Bosch branded as Kenmore, it worked fine but the racks started to fall apart after a few years and weren't very versatile to begin with. Currently I have a Kitchenaid with an extra-large 3rd rack, only had it for about 5 months but so far it is doing a great job and is way more versatile for loading (even with the large 3rd rack we have no problem fitting tall glasses on the second rack).

I had a Bosch. When it broke down, the mechanicals were packed in so tightly underneath -- you know... German engineering style -- that the quote to fix it was $200 more than a new dishwasher would cost. None of the NA brands are as quiet, but still a whisper compared to the hurricane sounds i was used to in my childhood.

No matter what, though, get the one with nice racks.

We have a Miele. It’s more pricy but my wife wants high quality - dishwasher, television, car, husband.

100% I had one as part of the house on 2 moves now.

One was 2008 model other was 2019

They were both garbage. I call Jenn Air the Cadillac of appliances. Chrome, shiney and GM/Whirlpool under the hood. Hot garbage.

Get a Miele
