Whether it takes 3 years, 5 years, or 10 years (our last "rebuild" didn't last very long but we also tried to trade our way out of it a little too soon), either way, the team needs stars, and the only real way we acquired them in our last rebuild was through the draft. The more committed we are to drafting and developing, the better this organization will be, but ultimately, leveraging the value of your veteran assets and being bad seems inevitable.

There was a rumor from Ryan Leslie that Backs asked for a trade last summer but recanted it so it isn’t surprising he doesn’t want to sign back

The extra money they get next year probably just washes out with that extra year they can get with the Flames.
If they don't want to sign an extension here, it is likely because these players don't believe this team can win. They got a look first hand at the guys who are suppose to lead this team and they didn't like what they saw.

They can get more from teams that haven't already committed money to Huberdeau and Kadri. There's only so much cap space here.

And whoever they are traded to this year can give them 8 years, or that team can do a sign and trade. And in some cases, a better 7 year deal erases the difference with an 8 year deal, especially in a tax friendly state.

If the team loses two of its top-three centres and one of its top-three defenseman, they are not just filling those spots internally. This is silly.

Murray/Craig need to open the chequebook for Backlund and Lindholm. This can all be rectified and Flames will be a playoff team next year.

Only if the wizard had traded Huberdeau, weeks from the chucky trade would have set up this franchise alot better. We still have 5 guys that could net alot 1st 2nds. We ain't winning no cup with this roster love my team but the game has changed and keeping older players just doesn't work most time.

Sillier to try and do it with free agents or by lowering the trade returns with hockey trades

No more half measures please. If we lose those players we are a bad team and should embrace it

Kings didn't take that long nor have the last couple of expansion teams that started with nothing outside of a roster of castoffs.

Do we really need more 30+ guys signed to big deals? I love both Backs and Lindy but the team committing a lot of money into 30+ guys long term is not a good idea

I already think the Flames/Edwards are offering these players above their worth, just like they did with Tkachuk and Gaudreau last year.

What rebuild netted great draft picks?

A mix of NHL veterans who they get back in trades for the pending UFAs, the UFA market (they’ll have loads of cap), and prospects.

There’s still a hazard in rushing prospects like Coronato. I know fans love shiny new things, but significant time in the AHL is the standard development path for all but the most elite prospects.

Could bring in an expiring contract but I wouldn't be too upset with not doing much.

Gotta see what the young guys have and the cap space is worth a lot. I think that team could sneak into the playoffs.

Following year go to Tavares or something. Probably be cheap.

Fair point, I just think of the 7 UFA’s those two are the guys you should prioritize. Can still build around them and be competitive with the current core.

And yet like with both Johnny and Tkachuk, it seems like they don’t want the extra coin and would rather take less somewhere else

I think these guys are leaning towards free agency in 24 because of the potential cap increase and signing now is too much of an unknown. If that’s the case then it’s time to move o
