Life isn't long enough to spend billions of dollars. You literally have to give it away.

And do you know how you become a billionaire? By exploiting human labour down a long chain of people that have less than you. Same way to become a millionaire, to be honest, just millionaires are more common and their exploitation happens at a smaller scale.

As for personal tragedies? Yeah, I should care more about the hardships, illnesses, accidents and deaths of people close to me. I don't have the capacity to care about these guys who were super stupid and got themselves into a super stupid situation.

I guarantee you there are dozens or hundreds of people who could have afforded to take this sub ride, were interested in seeing the titanic, and then looked at the sub, the company and its operations, and noped the #### out of doing it. It's not like these guys were duped into this. They made a super dumb decision and now they're dead. I don't know them. I don't know anybody else who knows them. I know there are far sadder things happening all over the world this very second (Ukraine?). You're being absolutely ridiculous to be clutching your pearls at our jokes about this meh of a tragedy.
I'm not disagreeing that this was a stupid and ill informed decision on their part. Many including myself would question why anybody would go on a thrill seeker adventure on a non-certified device. They were well aware of the risks as was evident by them signing waivers that prevented them from suing.

However, my point is that people can still wish for a non tragic ending and hope to have them saved. Money doesn't erase the fact that families will still grieve. I get the optics that they chose a path of stupidity but I still would like to see this turn out in a positive manner.

Once again not arguing with you that this was an awful idea from the get-go.

Hey Einstein. It isn't about the money. It's about doing something with obvious, known risks and losing the roll of the dice. Your expectation that us strangers 6000kms away should be broken up about this is absurd. Save your energy for people suffering at any one of the hospitals within a 30km radius from where you're sitting on the toilet posting right now.

Something about a crushed pickle stuffed in a tube 3000m down having to dill with it? Maybe I brought clay for ballast, and it all washed away?
Thread title would have to be Summer of the Sub.

To be fair, the jokes have been A+. Taking nothing away.

But when time runs out on their O2 I hope we can at least manage a tinge of respect for the loss of human life, keeping in mind the nightmarish ending they must have faced that we wouldn't subject our worst enemies to.

I wouldn't have done it and a billion dollars says there were not an insignificant number of people who wanted the experience, but didn't trust this operation.
The CEO of the company that made it jumping aboard had to add legitimacy to the whole thing. I wouldn't have done it either way as I just plain couldn't, not the money involved but being bolted into a cramped space like that going underwater for however many hours. Not a chance!

If I was of that ilk, though, I think watching the CEO of the damn thing hop in next to me would alleviate some of my reservations.

There’s not much to say or discuss about that migrant boat, it’s just very sad and it’s already concluded. 5 people trapped in a homemade sub at the bottom of the ocean next to the worlds most famous shipwreck in a race against time is just a more interesting story, sorry. And everyone agrees with that whether they like it or not unless I’m missing the 10 page thread on that story that you started.

I am not sure about the French ship, or the private companies that are there. Some of them are likely billing the coast guards, some might be there out of good will or getting paid for by private funds.
It's also important to discern sunk costs that are simply redeployed from actual additional costs. Presumably a lot of the people on the ships would be earning their wages, and the vessels/aircraft might be doing some amount of patrolling/etc anyways.

And even with additional costs they are likely budgeted for to some degree, so the money is likely getting spent either way.

Well it looks like that 100% rate is about to drop to 66.6% (for Titanic trips).

So it isn't just audio they're picking up? Maybe this sub is more advanced than we've been led to believe.

I read stories of people who have been on it before, but no mention of the depths it has previously reached.

I’m fairly sure it’s been down to the Titanic multiple times. I think I remember a couple articles mentioning that earlier in the BBC coverage. I’ll see if I can verify.

People always say this, but this is the exact situation to which I would subject my worst enemies.

And if you have read a night to remember the first class passengers who died were the ones who didn’t believe the boat would sink.

So Kind of ironic

Damn, man. I'm glad I don't harbour that much hatred for any one.

Maybe public humiliation or a simple and effective taint punch. But not suffocating to death at the bottom of the ocean with no food, minimal leg room and four other people losing their ####.

As the story goes with this couple though, Ida was offered a spot on life boat but she wouldn’t leave without her husband. Isador said he wouldn’t get on a lifeboat while other women and children were still onboard. So Ida gave her fur coat to her maid and put her on the lifeboat and the couple decided to die together on the Titanic. The story was told by the person putting passenger onto lifeboats. Isador was co-founder of Macy’s with his brother.
