Depending on the brand & model #, it might
be cheaper to buy a new Laptop.

Can't seem to get the game audio (live streaming online radio) to work at nhl.com. Tried with both IE and Firefox. The mini player pops up with both browsers, buffers, and then says it is playing, but I hear nothing. The fan960 listen live link works fine, so I don't believe it's a sound/speaker problem.
Ideas?

At work here we just had a laptop come in with a busted screen. Screen replacement cost - $1700. A new laptop - $1400.
However that also depends upon what screen you get. The quoted price we received was an exact replacement made by Samsung. A replacement made by LG is $700 cheaper. Look around, but if it is an older laptop it may be better to just get a new one.

Not an ideal solution, but if you just use the laptop at home and it has a vga output, you could hook it up to a flat panel or crt.

My company wanted to get rid of a computer that wasn't working so I took it hoping that I could fix it. Someone had removed the power supply and memory, everything else was OK. The system is Compaq Presario, Celeron D.
So, here is the problem: I connected a working power supply and a memory stick and computer wouldn't turn on.
-Everything is connected right, this is not my first time to do this.
-None of the fans turns on (CPU, power supply, or case fan)
-No sound from HD, CD or FD
-There is no light on the motherboard installed.
-The power LED turns on for a split second when power supply is connected.
-I disconnected all components except the motherboard and turned it on - still nothing.
-I connected an old PIV motherboard to the case and the power supply. The computer booted up into XP Pro after installing the drivers.
Is there anything I can do for the Celeron motherboard or should I just leave the PIV in?

Compaq Presario like HP and Dell motherboards, if something is wrong with the Mobo, u can only go to them for replacement. I think the mobo failure is like what u're going through right now. or PSU isn't providing enough power...

Hey Fella's.
This is a copy/paste of the the initial post for the thread I started last night, but it was closed.
I figure this might be a good place to request some PC help considering it's a local forum and all.
This problem has plagued me for some time now and this wont be the first time I turn to a forum for help. Simply put, I want my computer to run games at a high Framerate, so recently I decided to upgrade my Gfx card from a 9600XT to a X1950 Pro. Previous to the upgrade I had trouble getting my computer to run CS:Original at anything higher then 50 FPS while dropping to 20 FPS in major firefights... Now i'm not a Comp Tech, but a 9600XT with 1 Gig ram and 3.4 GHZ supporting it should be able to handle a 10 year old game.
So, after painstakingly looking for a solution which involved many disheartening calls, like i said, I decided to upgrade to the X1950Pro... I know AGP cards are going out of style but I went with what I knew. I also got a spysweeper and reformated windows. I've got all windows updates and all the latest radeon drivers.
20 minutes ago I was playing CS:source. When im looking at a wall I can hit upwards of 130 FPS, but as soon as I turn towards even the lightest of firefights, i'm dropping FPS like there were 100 simultaneous porn pop up adds on my desktop.
Any help and/or referalls would be appreciated.
Thanks

What resolution are you trying to run at?
And while Counterstrike may be a 10 year old game, CS:Source is updated with the same engine as HL2 so it is pretty recent. That said, you shouldn't bog down that much unless you are trying to run at really high specs.
I'm assuming you already have gone through Valve's recommendations?

My laptop managed to get a virus that I can't kick and I need some help. Every program I try to open (Word, Excel, etc) asks me to identify a program to open the file. The option to find a program on the internet to open the file is fruitless.
I tried to download antivirus software (my current antivirus was disabled) but again I cannot run the program because it cannot locate a program to open an .exe file.
Am I screwed? Do I need to reformat the computer and essentially lose everything on my hard drive?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have a few options.
1) If you are windows xp, if you have system restore on, you can attempt to go back to a state before you got the virus on your computer.
You can find information on that here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...rc=sec_doc_nam
2) Another way is you can actually try to find the virus executable in your system registry. See if you can find the .exe of the virus, and do a search on that .exe on the web. Norton has a bunch of virus removal tools. They should have one for the virus that is on your computer.
Virus's are usually found at the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Run or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Microsoft -> Windows -> RunOnce.
Don't ever change anything in the registry unless you take a back up first, or you know what you are doing.
If you can find an entry that doesn't look quite right, that would be the virus executable.
That's about all I can think of.

One other thing you can try if you can get on the internet (which I assume you can, since you are posting here) is http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
A couple of times I have had to boot into safe mode (with networking) and gone to this site and had some success.

Question for Excel Wizards
This is the second time this has happened to me now and I can't figure out how to fix it. I create an excel sheet, save it...everything works fine, but when I open the document again it opens it in two different windows. I can still manage to work and save these documents without a problem but I can't figure out how to get rid of the second window, so if there any Excel Wizards on CP tha can help out I would really appreciate it.

It's weird. I'll double click on the document, it will open normally then emediately opens a spawn. I can still work on the document, on either window actually, without loosing the information.

PS3 on old TV
Someone has brought over a PS3 and I can't get it to work on either of my shabby old tvs. They aren't that old though -- maybe 8 - 10 years old. JVC regular tvs that do everything else you can imagine.
Any help?
The bringer-over and plugger-inner is an old pro at this kind of thing but he has fancy tvs at his house and is convinced it's the tv. I am not, but I've got nothing.

Doesn't the PS3 only work over component and HDMI not old school connections?

I don't know. Maybe. I searched this topic and never came across anything like that. That could be it though. Seems kinda odd that they'd release something that won't play on a non-fancy TV.

This may be your problem:
Quote:
PLAYSTATION 3 remembers the display settings you give it. If you are moving your PS3 between an SD and an HD TV, you may find you have a blank screen. Simply reset your PLAYSTATION 3 to restore the default SD setting in the following way: turn off the PLAYSTATION 3 system then press and hold the power button for approximately 5 seconds until you hear a beep. You can then use the Settings category in the XMB to configure your Display settings manually.

Guys, I have a problem with hard disk drive - Windows XP says the used space is 50GB, but when I add up all directories from drive C:\ I end up with no more than 18GB of used space. How is that possible? Can I detect largest files/directories? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
