Fowler might have had a shot at 59 without those two bogeys. Obliterating the course right now.

Only day one, but it would be quite the story if Rickie could get that elusive major victory.

What a strange first round, you look at Fowler and Schauffele's scores and you'd think this is the easiest US Open course in history, but there's only 18 guys currently under par.

Most of the guys under par right now didn't play last weekend in Canada. Maybe they were all out in LA studying and practicing on the course?

Easiest in history? IDK but this is not what the USGA wants as these guys are destroying it.

Setup today has been pretty easy, but when you look at some of these holes they can pick some pretty diabolic pins if they so choose. Which, given the USGA's nature, I would expect we will see.

Azinger just said they are hitting 66% of fairways today, compared to 58% on the regular tour. So just seems like a fundamental miscalculation by the USGA which you can’t fix by moving the flag around.
Sure they can trick out the pins and turn it into mini golf but hopefully they don’t do that. Better to just accept the fact it will be a low scoping Open. Still some good golfers at the top.

Hey I'm all for a John Deere Classic type scoring with a -23 winner. But we all know the USGA doesn't like getting humiliated. I imagine they will use more back tees, they won't water the course much, if at all, and they will up the pin difficulty.

They can use some other team boxes to change the way some holes play. I think a bunch of the holes have tee boxes further back that can still come into play but I don't know how much that will impact fairways hit if the guys are just dialed in this weekend.

It’s a pretty easy course with deep rough. Hit the fairway and there’s going to be low scores.

Yah the fairways are very wide and it’s the way the course is designed. Narrow the fairways and you take many of the bunkers out of play.
There will be low scores and in fact the scores are even better than they look because they turned a par 72 into a par 70. 37 players shot in the 60’s.
Still there are some bogeys out there.

Private club, super exclusive, think they are the bee's knees. And their course just isn't that hard for pros. I couldn't shoot 120 from member tees probably, but the pros are just too good. I don't really even mind it, because I do love that the strategy of every player on the second wave changed when two 62s were carded. No "let's shoot par and see what happens". Very interested to see how the morning groups fare today.

Seems to be playing a bit harder today, but a lot of talk that it just isn't a US Open type course. Fairways are too wide. The rough looks like what you'd expect, so not much to be done there. Dry it out, roll the greens, and put the pins in ridiculous positions, and thats about all they can do.

Not that I'm breaking any news here, but this crowd absolutely sucks. LA should be permanently banned from hosting major sporting events.

Ive always seen Fowler as one as the good guys in the game, and not many players in the field Id like to see win more than him. Seeing him rebound after his career took a nosedive for about 5 years would be cool.

Yeah I’d like Fowler to win. Plus I love the shirt he’s wearing.
But two pars through 13 holes is crazy. He’s going to have to get on more of an even keel to win the US Open.

Did I hear right yesterday early in the round when the one of the announcers said they hadn’t watered the fairways in over a month?
