There are lots of people in this thread that are telling me they're not parents, without telling me they're not parents.

When did Edmonton not have an arena?
Point being eventually you have to build a new even center.
To suggest having major events in your city doesn't inject money into the economy is dumb.

the fact you consider investing in our health care instead of a sports arena as magic is kind of depressing.

So you're suggesting that if we had only put the "not funding an arena" dollars for the past 20+ years to hospitals, we wouldn't have the health care crunch we're experiencing right now?!?! Why didn't we not build an arena sooner?! Darn you, government!! Darn you to heck!!!

The provincial budget for healthcare is $24.5B.
The province is contributing $330MM to this arena development.
The health budget would not magically be $24.83B if this project was cancelled.

Hmmm, maybe, maybe not. Depends how you define major events and what is required to host them.
You don’t need an arena to host them, for example. And the cost to host them might very well (often does) outweigh the money they inject (if they inject any, as opposed to moving it around).
So, dumb? Eh, I think economists would disagree with you.

Brilliant argument. I can't afford to pay off my entire credit card bill right now, so I'm just not gonna pay it at all and book a trip to Cabo!!!! Because, if I can't 100% magically solve my entire credit card bill, it really is pointless to make anything more than the minimum payment.

Yes I realize that a failed arena deal doesn't just move money to where it ought to be spent. I thought we'd be sophisticated enough to understand that when people who are outraged at this corporate wellfare bring up wait times and the state of our medical care in the province we mean more money should be spent there instead of a passtime for the upper crust double meat people of Alberta, a plaything and toy for the ultra wealthy.

Some of us are just so ####ing jaded because we know exactly what will happen. In 2 years the UCP will claim we have no money, and cuts have to be made. Healthcare gets slashed and privatized, services go downhill, and we all get to look at how many hundreds of millions of dollars went to a shiny arena for millionaires to play for billionaires, while we wait 3 years to see a specialist(or shortcut the line with cash!).
If money was unlimited, it wouldn't matter. But dollars have to be allocated, and because we elect people to budget and spend where appropriate, well, this just ends up screwing us down the road.
Frankly, I find it pathetic that this even needs to be pointed out, as it happens so often I just assume you all are goldfish.

How was the budgeting from 2015-2019? Did any of that get new hospitals etc.?

The whole way we deliver primary care needs to restructured.

I'm impressed that this thread is not only going to solve the problem of how to properly breakdown the correct way to fund an arena and infrastructure project, but also the public healthcare system. Is there anything CP can't do?
