They make something like $2 billion profit a quarter, so this is basically a rounding error every year.

I would be surprised if Calgary got anything close to that then.

Yeah the naming rights for the Toronto arena is a massive outlier, that's about the same as what Crypto.com paid (during the peak of the last crypto bull season) to rename Staples Center. A few million/year for Calgary would be much more likely.

I think CSEC would be very happy if they could get $10 million per year.

In that case they must have been thrilled when they got their share of the expansion fees from Vegas and Seattle

Did anyone else not realize the Staples Center was named for the office supply company until they lost the rights? For whatever reason, I always just assumed it was named after a local benefactor or something...

The Breakdown @TheBreakdown
Here’s the thread that @ZiadFazel referenced last night on our show that spells out just how badly #yyc taxpayers seem to be getting taken to the cleaners on the arena deal!

Ziad Fazel @ZiadFazel
Stampede Park Arena aka "future Culture & Entertainment District Event Centre"
City of Calgary's presentation of the financials is deceptive:
• overstating direct benefits to City
• overstating CSEC investment
• understating City investment
• especially from Reserves

well at least I can quit hearing from Flames fans how Edmonton got bent over so badly and Calgary is too smart for that to happen.

Don’t worry, they’ll just scream “IT WAS WORTH IT, MONEY WELL SPENT, THE BATHROOMS ARE GREAT”

FYI:

Alberta Health Services has ordered Calgary to issue a boil water advisory for three communities, effective immediately.
The advisory applies to Silverado, Yorkville and Belmont until further notice.

Yeah I don't get what problem is solved here unless the zoning changes. If we reduce residential street parking usage (great, it shouldn't be free vehicle storage), then it should be opening up spots for businesses. Except only the people paying for the permits can park there, so we'll just have a bunch of empty street parking spots all the time. What a waste.
What is needed is a way to make sure that people buying units without parking can't just use public land to store their car. The price isn't nearly high enough to tackle this. If people buy units without parking, they shouldn't have an easy path to owning a car. If people no longer buy those units, then developers won't build them. We can't subsidize people with a car buying cheaper units via public street parking at the expense of everyone in the neighbourhood.

Oooooh…
Maybe this is how the arena deal happened so easily?
Just “ticking boxes”?

The video clip is something else with Councillor Dan McLean essentially admitting that he gamed the system on a bid submission for the 2010 Olympics for providing golf carts and utility vehicles

If you want restricted parking to residents/guests only, and want the city to patrol and enforce it, then yes, you should have to pay for it. You don't own the street in front of your house and frankly you're buying that spot for pretty cheap at the City's rate.
Which is exactly what calgarygeologist said above.
