It’s probably the person who was premier before the election’s fault.

Honestly, the NDP blew it with tax hike to 11%. No matter how well intentioned it was it was terrible politics. Even just going to 10%, which they could argue was the norm for years, would probably have saved them enough Calgary votes to make the difference.
It reminded me of the minimum wage hike. No issue with end goal but the timetable was so short. (Having said that I have no idea if there were net negative impacts to the minimum wage hike)

This is one of the companies that are reacting to Danielle Smith being elected. They were waiting and now action.

No...this has nothing to do with the election.
They changed CEO's because of lagging earnings in comparison to other oil giants.

“As a company we needed to make changes that will strengthen our company for the future, and that includes our overall cost structure,” Seetal said by phone, adding the 1,500 job losses will be spread across the organization and will affect both employees and contractors.
Suncor has been under pressure from shareholders — including activist investor Elliott Investment Management — to improve its financial and share price performance, which has lagged its peers.
Earlier this spring, Kruger, the former CEO of Imperial Oil Ltd., was enticed out of retirement to take the reins of Suncor and try to turn around the oilsands giant.

Likely true. However, if the NDP had won, guess what the headlines would have said about the identical move?

I think that's 100% true, but can you imagine the counter-factual.
If the NDP had been elected 2 days earlier, there would have been a never ending stream of opinion pieces and armchair economists for the next 25 years talking about how the NDP erodes investment in the oil industry just by looking at it. Nevermind the decades long trend towards disinvestment in development and towards squeezing every penny out of the existing infrastructure (because those guys understand where the climate change stuff is going too), never mind what happens every time the oil price shows a downward trend. NDP in power = scared investors, UPC in power = this was always going to happen.

What can or should the UCP do to prevent these kinds of things from happening, and would NDP supporters approve of it?

Easy there, we are in Alberta. Don't want to progress too quickly. Might frighten some people.
