While I generally agree with your statement, hindsight has proven Bennett correct in asking to be traded
.
He immediately popped when traded to Florida.

To be fair, Bennett was misused and jerked around for 6 years in Calgary, his wanting out had nothing to do with our fine city, blame the crappy coaches who took the teams highest ever draft pick that was drafted as a scoring center and played him as a bottom 6 winger, and while you're at it, blame the bum GM who drafted him with allowing it to happen.
I hope he assists on Chucky's cup winning goal (or vice versa)

Daily faceoff has 5 buyout candidates.
https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/oi...2023-offseason
1. Yamamoto
2. Mike Rilley
3. Mikael Granlund
4. Anthony Mantha
5. Ryan Suter
Would take a flyer on Mantha if the caps buy him out and he is willing to sign a short term show me deal.

I would absolutely agree on this, he could be a good buy low candidate, but would probably require someone else getting traded.

Pens are obviously at the end of the Crosby / Malkin success road, those dumb trade deadline moves were a last ditch effort to sneak into the playoffs one last time before really hitting the ditch.

If we trade out a large amount, we could take Mantha and Granlund. Mantha could perform well with Huberdeau, and Granlund could just be a reasonable placeholder.

People already realize that the Flames already have a superior version of Bennett....his name is Nazem Kadri. Exactly this time last year, he was doing everything Bennett was doing on the way to a Stanley Cup, but Kadri had more points and more goals. Kadri just needs to turn up his care-o-meter from a 3 to an 8 (Kadri at a ten is too much).

This "horrible" season Kadri had 7 more points than Bennett's career high playing in a Sutter system
Last year he had over 100 point pace and a Stanley Cup finals OT winner

Yeah but that was such a bad move by Hextall. They needed a third line C who could score goals and he went after Granlund who hasn't played C in years (and wasn't any good at it when he did) and is almost completely a playmaker who rarely even shoots. Basically the opposite what they needed
Sometimes you wonder if an average Joe would be any worse off as a GM than these so called pros...

Wanting and doing is two different stories. It's why they added before the deadline, even though that didn't accomplish anything. They missed by one point, Florida made it by one point and look where they are. Anything happens. They will try every year they have Crosby left to go for it. They last time they missed the playoffs was 2006. They need to make some tweaks and they'll be back in playoffs again next year.

Kadri is a fine player, although he's making too much money for way too long into his later years. He also cost us a 1st round pick.
Posters question those aspects more than the player himself.
Bennett is young and signed to a relatively cheap deal.

Mantha is 28 years old now. He may have a good year in him left but largely he is what he is and it's been years since he's been any good. I would pass on him but could live with a one year deal less than $2 million. Depending on how negotiations go with the pending UFA's it may be hard to justify signing a player like Mantha.

Totally agree. Not a long term solution by any means, but could be a decent depth add on short term, at low cost.

A guy like Mantha probably needs to be on 1 yr deals to keep his motivation high.

I'd laugh if the Oilers had to buy out Yamamoto.

There's a high probability they have to as I'm not sure a lot of teams will be interested in taking on a small forward with concussion issues that averages about 9 goals a season at his salary next season of $3.1 million. He's not any better than Puljujarvi who's going to be out of the league soon.

No doubt, I just thought it was funny the Oilers have to buy out players because they keep paying them for having one good season.

I expect that's the type of player Chicago will target on 1-year deals. And likely Max Domi.

Bennett is inferior to Kadri and singed at $4.425 million/year with a big raise likely due in two years. Bennett is also turning 27 in a couple of weeks. That's not especially young for an NHL player.
The Flames also acquired 2 seconds when trading Bennett. The first traded in the Monahan deal will be the 29th overall.
Obviously, the Flames are losing out through all these transactions, but it's hardly some franchise killing set of events.
