The Oilers have too many problems. Skinner has looked less then mediocre in the playoffs. The Oilers are getting fed 5v5, and the bottom half of their lineup has vanished.

Die Oilers, Die Leafs.
The Oilers are an extremely flawed hockey team which throughout the year was propelled by a record breaking PP unit. The PP grossly inflated Oilers points in the standings and production stats (see Hyman, Nugent-Hopkins, Barrie (before traded), Bouchard (after Barrie traded) so they had themselves convinced they are an actual contender.

The Oilers are in the bottom half of the entire league in 5v5 and they continuously refuse to address it. No one ever holds McReferee or Pissy accountable for their performance on their own side of center. Draisaitl was comically bad in Game 3, absolutely ridiculous... and McDavid is an absolute turnover machine in the neutral zone. I don't expect they will ever fix this part of their games since the desire to be the 80's Oilers comes right from the owner. As such, if the officiating is objective and fair, there is zero chance that the Oilers are ever going to win with these guys...... zero.

What is even funnier is that this year is literally their window. The salary cap is only going up $1MM and all their players coming off the books will remain either static or need a raise, and they don't have enough depth on the farm to backfill.

Derek Ryan - $1.25MM (guessing resign at $1.5MM)
Mattias Janmark - $1.25MM (will want $1.5MM min)
Ryan McLeod - $798k (will want $1.5-1.75MM)
Klim Kostin - $750k (will want $1.25MM - $1.5MM)
Nick Bjugstad - $450k (will want at least $1MM)

On top of this, Skinners new contract kicks in @ $2.6MM up from $750k and they need to sign Bouchard who currently makes $863k. Guessing Bouchard will do a bridge deal at around $5MM for 2 yrs or so.

I think they will try to move on from Yamamoto, Foegele and Kulak. It will take a sweetener to move Yamamoto and Foegele and they won't get much for Kulak (and he is one of their best dzone defenseman). I don't even think moving those 3 players for draft capital even allows them to break even.

The Oilers, and Ken Holland the supposed greatest mastermind ever, are in absolute cap hell and it is fantastic. There is going to be a massive crash up north and it will be beautiful.

I think this is the best iteration either team will ice.

Can't wait to see them panic in the summer and wind up making their groups worse trying too hard to redeem their (yet again) premature exits.

Yep
A lot of roster spots opening up, not a lot of cash being freed up while being well over the cap this year.
Makes one wonder.
If you consider their cap situation, coupled with McDavids, Matthews and Draisaitls performance in the playoffs this year, it starts to make more sense that McDavid end up in Toronto in the near future. Then you have to wonder what becomes of Draisaitls game once he becomes a one trick pony.

Why couldn't that game have happened on Saturday, when an Oiler fan I'm dating was in town so we went to Oilers Central aka Trolley 5, and I had to sit through a 3 hour Greaser cocky love-fest in there during a blowout win? Being in that crowd for last night's game would've been delicious..

The smartest thing for Edmonton to do would be to move McDavid and use that cap space to round out their lineup. I would be much more afraid of the Oilers if they were able to acquire a high end scoring forward, a legit top pair dman and some other future propsects and picks.

So was this the closest 5-1 loss in NHL playoff history?

I think it will be draisaitl that goes first. Less term left on his deal, spends his summers in LA and likely will have had enough of this market based on how frustrated he gets with the media. Plus he will be demanding to be the highest paid player in the NHL. And the oilers will have to follow up that same demand the following year for McDavid.

It really is a catch 22 for them. Have to keep draisaitl or McDavid will want out for sure. Have to pay draisaitl the highest salary in the league to keep him. Also have to top that salary the following year with McDavid.

This is it. Their window will close fast after this. Let’s go Vegas! Get this done! Please!

Like a good 403 area kid!

Brossoit has been a career journey man backup for a reason. I didn't trust him to be better than Skinner over a series tbh.

If Kulak is one of your best defenceman thats trouble. They are all Pylons defensively other than Ekholm. That Orange is very fitting.

I agree with you, but look at the rest. Nurse, Broberg, Ceci, Bouchard??????? Kulak is much better defensively than any of those others. I'm guessing they would love to move Ceci but no one is taking his contract.

Hopefully last night's game is an indication that the refs are catching on to all the embellishing that the Oilers do and are sick of falling for it.

Although, I wouldn't be surprised if the league steps in again and makes an officiating change to give them a re-set.

Katz is probably pulling whatever strings he can to get the game 2 refs back in rotation for game 4.

Yeah. M'thinks after the confident Saturday win, he spent the bucks on Brazilian hookers instead of lining the pockets of officials for a few no-good PP calls.

I always thought the first thing was just code for the second one.

I hope the Knights don't let up like the Kings, bring that commanding 3-1 lead back home.

I was out at my daughters extra curriculars last night, and another dad was streaming the game on his phone. He looked like he was gonna cry muttering things like "what the" and "unbelievable" under his breath, I was just having the time of my life watching his reactions. I might be a bad person.
