Yeah, a lot of these articles paint a pretty bleak picture. Bad coaching hires, bad player management, misidentifying talent, poor spending choices.
I think Treliving left at the right time. With the season we had and the “behind the scenes” stuff coming out detailing the incredibly slow process of losing our best players and just overall making really absurd choices (signing Frolik instead of giving Tkachuk 8 years is insane in retrospect) I think the public sentiment would have turned on him pretty quickly.
Hopefully the next chapter in Calgary Flames history has them valuing the talent they actually have.

It was time to move on from both Tre and Sutter. I wouldn’t say I’m “glad” to see them go but I’m glad the org seems to be going in a more progressive direction

Even if you're happy Treliving's gone, what reason is there to expect things will be better?
The Flames have the old Coyotes' GM in place to do the hiring, and he's doing so under the watch of Edward's who kind of seems like he messed the whole thing up in the team's process of implosion.
Maloney and Bean's comments in press conferences also suggest whoever is brought in will have the same "make the playoffs & no rebuilding" mandate as everyone before.
I don't see what gives cause to expect anything outside of what we've seen for the last 30 years.

Yeah we are past the point of pointing fingers at individuals like Edwards and Sutter as Treliving wouldn't have had to deal with the Sutter issue if he was able to hire a competent head coach on his own. Lots of blame to go around. Edwards may not be going anywhere but I'm happy to turn the page on both the Sutter and Treliving eras.

I still think he was good but yeah I think its good we get a fresh start.
I still believe his biggest mistake was Glen who had no idea what he was doing and it was downhill with Sam after that.
I still remember Geoff Ward asked him what position he wanted to play during the covid season and he said center and was put on the wing during camp.
All we can do is move forward now.

Not surprised you can't see how anyone can defend him if that's the minimal effort you are putting into understanding that perspective.
Again people have outlined their reasons. They can be debated. You can disagree with it. But minimizing it down to "something something Murray Edwards" is lame.

Treliving loved using the RFA status to nickel and dime stars then pay out his backside for depth, it was infuriating then and even more so in retrospect. Things didn't need to go to the wire when Gaudreau was an RFA, it was so silly. Ended up missing training camp and had one of his worst seasons ever.

You take the good with the bad. Treliving was very good at a lot.
But if you had to point to one thing in his control that he failed, it was hiring a coach.

Taking a while to get to 5000

I would assume this mean Backlund sticks around. Wants to, has the backing of his team, this is what you want out of your home grown players.
I can see how Sutter and his treatment of the captaincy would sour Backlund on the franchise.
I don't know about Lindholm though. Might be one too many issues he's unhappy about.

Funny thing is, the team makeup hasn't changed from garbage bag day, whch means the talk of wanting to move because of a desire to win and not be on a rebuild was kind of lip service and the real reason was Sutter. Understandable that they didn't want to criticize him publicly especially when he was still there at the time.

I mean, Backs hasn't said anything himself - but yeah, hearing this from Friedman could certainly be looked at as Backlund being one of the major anti-Sutter guys.
This summer should reveal a lot.

I'm sure he does want to win, and that has meaning to him, but so does being that recognized titled leader on and off the ice. Which I can understand.

Backlund deserves it, and deserved it last season, but there are lots of chips left to fall.

Good. Backs deserves it.
If the Flames bungle around another player and dont give him his rightly earned C, then the Flames deserve to lose him.

Yeah the players being bashed as complainers and being babies and oh no mean Sutter all did a professional job said the right things in the media, and discussed the issues during their respective interviews.
No captain looked like it was a bigger issue as well now, and I feel like that may have caused more resentment towards Sutter because he wanted to be the face of the team and captain.

watching these playoffs this team with good goaltending is good enough to win
especially with Kylington back and maybe a dman moved for forward help, young guys injected, proper coaching strategy like playing top players more than the 4th line.
Its actually crazy they had 93 points with so much working against them.
