So it is weird that we haven’t hear from Sutter yet, right? If Sutter was staying then he would have spoken to the media by now wouldn’t he?

I would imagine the Flames are waiting for the smoke to clear in regards to Treliving's exit. It's going to be awkward if the media asks him about his relationship with the GM as Darryl isn't one to take the high road especially when the media is involved.

Yeah I'm really looking forward to another press conference where Sutter doesn't answer a question and can't make eye contact with anyone.

Never quite thought of him as a "treasure". More of an embittered outsider trying to stir it up. But you are right...he has nothing to lose at this point.

Or says something dumb like; "Well we finished with more points than the Panthers who made the playoffs in the East." I'll never forget when he pulled that card as GM.

Seravalli seemed pretty confident on 960 this morning that even though the Flames wanted Treliving back, they would not grant him the autonomy to fire Sutter.
Because of that, he said that ownership chose Sutter over Treliving.
I'm not sure what kind of rookie GM would want to step into this scenario, but given all of this, I don't see how the GM could be anybody except Conroy.

Seravalli seems to have some insider knowledge as he was steadfast all season there was a rift between the GM and coach and that one of them would be out after the season. Things were and played out exactly as he said.

I mean, if we're being intellectually honest (ha!), Conroy is already under contract and probably at a discount rate. The hunt for a new GM is about as real as when Treliving would do coach interviews. They have their guy and Sutter will have a camera/media friendly puppet. Just waiting for the dust to settle.

Friedman and others saying that Doug Wilson is going to return to the NHL in some capacity. Over his health issues (mostly?).
Too bad we have Maloney already. Wilson as President and someone like Conroy as GM would be superb. Wilson flamed out at the end, but had a long run of patiently waiting for top players to come available and pouncing + good drafting (although several came from his old Coach Brian Kilrea and the 67's).

Edwards big gaff here is keeping Treliving too long. Not that I wouldn't love a team run by a fully in charge Tre. That would be great. But trust for BT to do his job eroded over time. Rumored blocking of trades/buyouts and then hiring his own coach... Dude should have just whacked him. The good thing about Conroy is that he theoretically has preestablished trust with ownership since it seems Edwards has big trust issues. Somebody finding that guy a therapist could also be a shrewd organizational move.

I do think Conroy is potentially a plan B. The one interesting move I could potentially see happening is a GM swap between the Flames and Leafs. I think Treliving could definitely be someone Toronto goes after if the Leafs lose to Tampa. By all accounts their ownership group was not comfortable offering Dubas an extension. I wonder if the Flames take a serious run at him but they likely will need to outbid Pittsburgh for his services. Does Dubas prefer to limp along the Crosby-Malkin Pens and embark on an eventual rebuild or try and retool a Flames team that has some rough contracts on the books? He will want the autonomy to fire Sutter which we are not sure ownership would give him?

You'd think with some big cap hits kicking in next season, and some talented offensive players likely on their way out within the next year, a cheap, offensively-talented guy like Phillips would be perfect to give a flyer on next year for a team that's on the verge of a hybrid rebuild.
You'd think.

Not with Darryl here. 960 had a bit the other day talking about the unusual hype surrounding Phillips' call up last winter. How it seemed like the GM was trying to motivate (or pressure) Darryl into playing him as it was unusual for someone to be called up to such fan fare like that. We all know how that ended.

Honestly I probably trust NilssonistheReal14 info on this more than any of the insiders.
I still think he could have fired Sutter, but he wasn't given Full Autonomy and would only get a 2 year extension and I don't blame him for walking in that case.

That must have drove management and even the marketing team crazy.
You have this prospect that is a local kid, played his minor hockey in Calgary, one of the main stars on the new team in the city you're trying to promote in the Wranglers, who is averaging 1.5 PPG in the AHL, and fans are just screaming for him to get a real look in offensive minutes with the Flames.
And he sits in the press box, gets into 2 games, plays 16 minutes and now probably will leave the organization in the offseason. Probably pissed Brad Pascal off more than anyone because right about that moment he probably went "Well won't have Phillips on the Wranglers next year now".

The mishandling of Phillips still pisses me off. Guy gets drafted by his hometown team and puts up big numbers in the A only to not get a fair chance to show what he’s got by a stubborn coach. If a Marty St. Louis situation happens with him it would suck, but at the same time it’d be deserved for not giving him a fair shot

It's kind of annoying that Treliving hasn't made a statement. I don't know if the team asked him not to, or if just doesn't want to, but either way if someone quits, I think a direct explanation to the fans from the person who quit is the courteous thing to do.

I think that there is %1000 more tension between Sutter and the media than between Sutter and BT. The media has been trying to make mountains out of mole hills are year when it comes to trying to promote young players who are not NHL players.

(One of) the problems with bringing a guy with the history that Sutter has here back, is that the media was bracing for a fight before he even sat down. And so was he. Immediately contentious. But this is only one of the many issues.
