I was always of the opinion that Burke was way over rated as a hockey executive. He's a loud and bombastic style of person who commands media attention and he's good at it. He has his so called "schtick" He isn't low key like a Doug Wilson from SJ or a Pollie from Nashville but more of a powerful and opinionated guy.

I do agree like other posters that he brought in some increased level of respect and some experience to the Flames organization during a rough time. He was also brought in to straighten the franchise and to bring us a winner.

Burke, despite his "we mutually parted ways" was most likely respectfully fired. His role as POHO was to tutor and provide guidance to the GM and to help prevent mistakes that a rookie GM could make and help take some of the load off. I think ownership started to see a bunch of the mistakes being made here with everybody and really started to question what type of value they may have been getting for their $3+ million a year in salary for their POHO.

He was hired to bring a winner to Pittsburgh and clearly that never transpired. I like Burke but this notion that a lot of people have that he is some large scale winning hockey executive is not rooted in reality. He has a ring, with a 2007 Ducks team that had some really solid pieces from before that he tweaked well but his performance after that and in Toronto, Calgary and Pittsburgh leaves a lot to be desired.

He touches on that in his book, basically just says that when he first came to Calgary that the deal was at the end of each year either side could decide that they didn't need him anymore, and it did indeed come from the Flames side.

His Vancouver stink always makes me suspicious.

I want the Flames to keep Tre, or I guess more like, I hope Tre decides to stay on Calgary, but if he doesn't, Dubas is the best replacement available if the Leafs walk away from him.

I kinda hope Burke comes back as POHO, I've heard that Bean puts the bean in beancounter, and just think you need a hockey man in that role, not an accountant.

EDIT: If Tre became POHO that'd be OK too.

Shouldn't be that surprising I think.

Fenway Sports Group has been very analytics focused for both the Red Sox and Liverpool. So going after Dubas or Tulsky would not be surprising at all.

TSN has way better hockey coverage and analysts in my opinion but Rogers has the tv rights.

Through his entire management career, Brian Burke was always "the media are nothing but parasites" then he get's canned from the Flames and get's a $1 million + a year gig on TV and is than doing everything he hated.

They haven't made it past the 1st round the last 5 seasons. I think the dream to win the cup with Crosby and Malkin is over. It will be a long rebuild when they eventually decide to do it.

Agreed, Burke is a terribly overrated manager but he makes for great TV

Burke hit a few absolute grand slams: with the Sedin draft in Vancouver, essentially a franchise altering moment, his time in Anaheim really was highlighted by signing Scotty Neidermyer, Teemu and then acquiring Pronger in Anaheim.

However I feel like he used up all of his juju as things just did not go very well after that. Toronto was a bit of a disaster. His insistence on Ron Wilson as coach was very bad, of course the Kessel trade was a disaster, trading up for Tyler Biggs. Even though the Phaneuf trade for the Flames was a fleecing, Phaneuf was a deeply flawed player and the Leafs still sucked with him on their team. His relationship with Nonis was a bit of a head scratcher as Nonis was not a good executive but where ever Brian went there went Nonis.

I would say his career has been on a fairly consistent downward trajectory since his Anaheim years.
