35% sounds big, but it was only 14 points.
Again, I am not saying Huberdeau isn't skilled and other players won't benefit a little from that, but when I think of players who elevate their line mates, I think of players like Thornton who made Cheechoo a 50 goal scorer, or those bums up north. Hoffman getting 14 more points, or Bennett falling off 5 points doesn't really say a lot.

I wonder if new ownership group wants to make their mark?

Got the email earlier today. Nothing crazy about the email:
Quote:
On behalf of the Calgary Flames ownership, management, players, coaches, and staff, thank you for being a Flames Season Ticket Member this season.
We are privileged to play in front of the very best fans in the National Hockey League. The support shown all season long by the C of Red continues to go unmatched and we thank you for bringing the energy for every single game at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Like you, we are disappointed that we will not be participating in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The work for next season begins today. We are already engaged at all levels of our organization to prepare for the 2023-2024 Flames season.
Your 2023-24 Membership Statement will be delivered to you by email next week. Please keep an eye on your email inbox for further information, and if you have any questions our Customer Service Team is here to help.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you back at the Scotiabank Saddledome in the fall.
|
The odd thing is that the renewals didn’t come out earlier. Perhaps we get some sort of news in the next couple of days on who is in charge etc.

As mentioned yesterday, the Flames ownership overreacted after unexpectedly poor seasons in both 1990-91 and 2009-10 (among others), but the decisions made in the immediate aftermath of those two seasons, each set the franchise down very dark paths for the next 5-10 years.

I found this stat interesting today.
Since 09-10 there are 40 teams that had a 5v5 S%+SV% below 98.5%.
Only one of those teams actually finished in a positive GF% at 5v5. The 2022-2023 Calgary Flames.
https://www.nhl.com/stats/teams?aggr...=0&pageSize=50
They had the 9th worst 5v5 save percentage going back to the 09-10 season...and still should have made the playoffs. Honestly I'm not sure as a organization you can overreact to that.
|
That’s really amazing! Thanks for this.
After all that happened this year- the questionable coaching, lack of scoring, disappointing additions to the roster, OT losses, rumblings about the room, bad goaltending- we still finished with 93 points.

I can tell you one thing from sitting directly in front of a bunch of Flames management and coaches in past years at various camps and scrimmages, and eavesdropping in- Conroy runs the WHOLE conversation, and answers any and all questions the other higher-ups may have. He knows all the details of every player and prospect, where they are playing, where they are going, fitness, contracts, etc. He also knows every detail about the coaching and training staff, and details about trades.Listening to their conversations, one would think it was Conroy that was in charge.

I wonder what this means for Pascall?
I believe he is also serving as GM of the Wranglers, but I'm not sure how much credit he deserves for their success.

They were all goals. 14 more goals is pretty huge. And the next year he got 29 in only 69 games.

I think a good move would be for Treliving to move up to President and let him bring in his own GM. This way he has more control over the decisions and direction of the organization. If he wants more youth then the new GM would be given the mandate to make it happen and as well the new GM might see a need to change the coach. It might create a better management team that has a bit more ability to change directions as opposed to just "win now".
Possibly Treliving would have a better handle on Sutter and the direction of the team if he was the President.

But the only reason I can think of for having a POHO is so that person has executive decision making authority, and that authority needs to come from the owners. Everything I read tells me that ownership is tying his hands and not giving him the autonomy/latitude he wants. So makes little sense to put that person into a more senior job.
If you’re looking for a POHO on the current payroll, there is only one likely candidate.

Conroy has a degree in Business, does he not? You see his name mentioned in contract negotiations from time to time.
Also, a sixth rounder who registers 1000 career games usually does so based on his own merits. Obviously a keen student of the game.

You don't think it would give him more authority? Edwards might give him the reins to make more decisions especially if the alternative is he might lose Tre? I think it would create a more dynamic management team with more ability to change direction. Didn’t Tre create a league in the past, he has a wealth of knowledge and might do better if he is the one giving directions..

An internet search actually shows that Huberdeau and Hoffman did not even play on the same line often, and when they did, it actually wasn't that good. Huberdeau mainly played with Barkov and Dadonov both of those seasons.
https://www.moneypuck.com/lines.htm
In 2019-2020, Hoffman played mainly with Trochek and Connolly, or Vatrano and Toninato. He played less than 24 minutes with Huberdeau that season.
In 2018-2019, Hoffman played more with Barkov and Dadonov (188 minutes), and only 156 minutes with Huberdeau (Barkov was also on the line), and the latter line was not great (only scored 6 goals between all 3 forwards).

Powerplay...Hoffman scored a lot on the PP. Guess who is a PP wizard?
