I like Coleman the player but there's a reason the Lightning won the cup when he was on a $1.8 million deal and why he's not moved the needle for the Flames at $5 million a season. He's been a great 3rd line player for the Flames but you don't win Stanley Cups paying those guys the same salary as a top 3/4 defenseman or top 6 winger. It's all about acquiring and paying elite, difference making players now in the NHL. The Oilers don't have nearly the quality of depth on their roster as the Flames but they have been consistently better the past few seasons because their top guys are better. Top heavy rosters is likely the future of NHL hockey and teams that overcommit to depth are likely going to be in the same situation as the Flames.

Coleman’s at their salary are fine to have when you have multiple players punching above their weight class with sweetheart deals or ELC’s. The flames have sweetheart deals like Lindholm, Toffoli, Andersson, Hanifin that are almost all of expiring soon (3 in the next year) so Coleman becomes a bit of a problem with his cap hit and middle 6 production. Especially now that the team has some massive overpays in the form of Kadri and Hubderdeau who will be unlikely to ever live up to their current cap hits.
|
I think the Kadris and Huberdeaus would both be better if each of them had a Coleman on their line.
Coleman is 140th in forward salary and 95th in five on five points.
If you could have three of them, you fit them in.

So, honest question here: in light of Kadri's comments last night after his two major gaffes against the Hawks, generally blaming the ice instead of acknowledging his own lazy, selfish playing...can the Flames reassign him to the minors, burying his salary there and forcing him to ride the bus, stay in less-stellar hotels etc? If he fails to report or quits, his contract can be suspended ... am I right?
Is this even a possibility?
He needs a BIG wake-up call and NOT a soft bed.

Coleman has 4 goalies and is a minus 2 over the past 15 games where the Flames are looking for difference makers every game
He isn’t a bad player , nor the problem , but spending 5$ a year on a player who tops out as a 20/20 guy through his mid 30s is another example of BT chasing an overpaid player and “winning” the bidding war
He’s the least of the UFA problems , but part of BT UFA trend
I would love 3 Coleman’s on entry level deals - If Duehr became a Coleman that is perfect . But you win paying these guys below market before they hit UFA then you let someone else pay them
The Flames work backwards then every other team in the league - Every other teams locks up their younger players /stars for 7-8 years and fills out the rest of their team with home grown talent
The Flames played hardball with their stars / were restricted due to cap problems caused by signing UFAs on offering more money but have no issue chasing the next great thing in UFA and paying for what will (usually) be a players down years
And then the team wonders why these mercenaries don’t play as hard as they did playing for teams that drafted them and when they were trying to prove themselves
BTs critical flaw is his judgement of UFAs values IMO. He is great at negotiating with his own players on contract renewals , but completely blows it and throws out all restraint when other teams are competing for the player. (Same thing happened with the Hamonic trade when the other Canadian Western teams were apparently competing for his services)
Maybe he gets too competitive about “winning” the player and it clouds his normally very business like approach , but how he acts when dealing with his players and how he acts when trying to acquire a fancy new object are completely different in regards to strategy and financial accumen

I haven't seen Kadri make the throat-slashing gesture all season long. It's like he doesn't even care.

Coleman at his best is an excellent grinding 15-20 goal scorer, 3rd line player worth 3-4 million a season! Flames need to find a Gourde and Goodrow to complement him! Huberdeau needs a sniper like Verhaeghe to play with!

If only he played with 10% of the effort that he did at the start of the year (when he was our best forward) — at least he’d be invisible instead of noticeably bad and turning over pucks that end up in our net.
What a veteran leader this guy is.

Everybody knows Kadri really elevates his ability to get suspended in the playoffs, come now.

On one hand it seems Kadri is at his nadir after last night, but he is going to be in his late 30s when that $7 million comes off the books. The mistakes last night were awful, but him blaming the ice was comical.
Gotta be a fresh start next season, hopefully he starts showing his worth.

I like Coleman, the guy signed a big money contract (for a player of his ilk) and continues to bring it. He obviously cares. I hope he stays this good for four more years.
Ideally you have a player like Coleman that you develop internally, and lock them up for some term before they get too expensive.

He's playing to the contract that he's worth, which is probably in the high 3 or low 4 million. Unfortunately, Brad in free agency is like me on pay day.

Brad loves stroking the ego and beating out anyone for the big name at the time. It’s happened year after year. Free agents from outside get a nice salary at a long term, or he deals draft picks to get the player he and others want. In some ways he gets who he wants but in other ways it seems to be an overpay where years down the road the time to pay up happens.

He's 5th in team five on five scoring over the last 15 games.
And has had to help Huberdeau along which has completely tanked what was was one of the best lines in hockey.

No one is arguing that Coleman is bad / not a net positive . Just slightly overpaid for what he brings , and likely to get worse over the course of the contract
But you don’t win cups with Coleman’s making that kind of money . Spend it on your stars and stop chasing UFAs that are past their prime years to long term deals

Terrible form to go back and have a chuckle at someone's expense.

I don't even have time for anyone that uses the term woke these days. The pendulum of stupidity swings back and forth between extremes. At one point progressives were pushing a little hard in terms of reaching for equality and acceptance of minorities and the LGBTQ community. Part of that certainly being that they declared some form of victory while "slamming" anyone that didn't hop on the train, trying to outcast them as dinosaurs.
These days we've swung back the other way, where people on the right are constantly screaming "OR MAYBE I'M NOT WOKKKKEEE ENOUGH TO SPEAK!!!!!!" and a bunch of other melodramatic bull**** feelings that they're persecuted and shouted down when they're clearly not.
If anything, those that don't like forward progression for minorities and marginalized groups are smelling like roses these days. Most forward progress has been successfully halted by conservative groups and braindead, QAnon backed divisive discussion that favours stagnation at best and regression at worst.

Jesus ... lots of fun people around here today.
You don't see a difference between pulling a comment made an hour before overreacting to a game that ends in a win vs a fan thinking Kadri would be a good captain 6 months ago?

Relax, it was meant to provide levity, lol. Just ease up and have fun with it, you guys are wound too tight. The positive posters poke and prod the negative posters, the negative posters poke and prod the positive posters, it's all kinda silly, we gotta have more humility than this, it can't be that serious.
I even went back to find my own comment and make fun of it, but as posted it turns out I was off on some tangent about woke culture.
