I guess they call him Mr. Glass.

I wonder what Monahan gets for contract offers this upcoming offseason. Have to think with him playing fairly well with the Canadiens when healthy this year that he'll have some interest, just not sure what the price would be. I'd take him back, just not sure where he fits with Kadri, Backlund and Lindholm on the team. Flames will have to do some cap gymnastics this offseason anyways, so wonder if they'd be interested in bringing him back to play with some of the younger guys on a 4th line, and be able to jump up the lineup in case of injury to others. Wouldn't be the worst insurance option if the price was right.
I doubt it's league minimum, maybe around $2m?

1 yr league min at best. I don't think there'd be any real interest, he's too injury prone.

Johnny only has 19 goals. So that's something we can hang our hat on I guess.

Now maybe he figures that out moving forward but I just didn't think we could be a contender as him as our best or 2nd best player at the cap hit he was seeking.

This line of thinking is so strange to me. You wanted him moved because he didn’t elevate his game in the playoffs? Tkachuk’s last season in Calgary was his 23/24 year old season. That is still a very young player.
You don’t trade 100 point superstars like that. You get him more experience, surround him with leadership and let him learn what it takes. If Tkachuk was willing to stay in Calgary you do everything you can to sign him. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case.
Also, I don’t think it’s fair to take any credit away from what Tkachuk has done this season because he “plays with some good players”. He’s outscoring everybody on his team by over 30 points. He’s putting up better numbers than he did with Gaudreau.
Last thing, the east isn’t anymore open or higher scoring than the west. 7/10 top scorers in the NHL are in the western conference.

Every other team in the league seems to park players like Monahan on LTIR for a year. It might have been good for him.
We give up a first round pick.
So frustrating.

I feel for Mony, but could this be the end? Money shouldn't be an issue for him after this contract, and I'm sure there's some off-ice role in Calgary waiting for him.
He's a player who frustrated me, especially in the later years when the injuries piled up and the scoring fell away, but his rookie season was my first full season following the Flames, and I'll never forget his contributions, and the line with Johnny and Hudler.
The hug with Johnny, I think it was after Johnny roofed the series winner past Oettinger, is one of my favourite moments following this club.

Monahan was seemingly healthy at the start of this season, and looking decent.
Not sure how his current groin injury happened -- whether it was related to the walking boot he was wearing before or perhaps the previous hip surgeries -- but I can't see him hanging it up just yet.
That said, I'm sure NHL teams are going to be weary of his history -- you might get 25-30 games but after that who knows.

I imagine he'll get a lot of PTO offers, but nothing concrete until they can see him skate. Monny has shown that he just cannot stay healthy for the last 5-6 years.

Monahan will be eligible for performance bonuses if he signs a 1 year deal this summer because he qualifies on the last point:
Quote:
- The player is on an entry-level contract.
- The player has signed a one-year contract and is over 35 years old.
- The player has signed a one-year contract after returning from a long-term injury (has played 400 or more games, and spent 100 or more days on the Injured Reserve in the last year of their most recent contract).
|
Structuring a games played performance bonus, it becomes a lot less risky for teams to sign him.
e.g 1 mil base salary + $250k for every 20 games he plays

I think rebuilding teams would be happy to pay $2-3M for him to play some tough minutes and hopefully generate a return at TDL.
I wonder if the better move for him would be a league mininum 'load management' season on a contender, where he might win a cup and potentially show well in the playoffs to earn a bigger payday moving forward.

Monahan hasn't played since early december because he is glass.
At this point he's a risky signing, regardless of the cap hit. Very little guarantee you get an extended period of good health from him.

If you (a) insure it and (b) can LTIR him how is he that risky? I imagine he's only going to get a one year term.

Monahan would be an ideal player to sign at league minimum with a bunch of performance bonuses.

I love Monahan, still do. Among the three Monahan, Gaudreau and Tkachuk, I love him the most. But at this point, I'd rather give the spot to a kid from the farm. I wish him all the best.

I think Monahan should make a choice for his health. He's really be ground down over the years and has lived a good portion of his young adult life suffering.
Like when he was describing leg locking and not being able to sleep. It would be nice for him to transition into training roles and other roles.
I think the compete in him though and the love for the game drives him and I won't be surprised if he signs somewhere. I wish him well but also an existence where's not in constant pain or operations.

I don't know how a contending team signs him to anything more than league minimum. Can't afford to use cap space on a player who isn't on the ice.

That said, I would love it if the Flames brought Mony back on a performance bonus heavy contract. But I'm sentimental.
