I’d bet Conroy is relied upon for some. And Sutter is an unofficial pro scout as well. It’s clear he had a lot of input on trades and UFAs.

Who knows what this team could’ve achieved if they had instead drafted a Noah Dobson, a Jordan Kyrou or Alex Debrincat, a Mat Barzal, Kyle Connor or Thomas Chabot and etc. The Flames could’ve used just a couple of impact players to really become contenders during their window. Hamonic, Hamilton and Brian Elliott just to name a few, didn’t do anything for the Flames to help them further their cause throughout their time here and it cost the Flames a chance to score big on some future stars.

If I could have a conversation with anyone in the Flames organization, it would be Tod Button. Would love to see their draft lists and the direction that the organization would be today if they were smarter with their assets. Afterall, this is the same man that found Gaudreau at #104, future Norris winner Adam Fox at #66, Rasmus at #53, Mangiapane at #166, Dustin Wolf at #217 and etc. The amateur scouting staff was the true MVP of this organization for the last decade+.

Not to derail the thread but I think Treliving has done a good job of drafting prospects given where he chose and the outcome of those prospects. Every team could’ve drafted someone better in hindsight. Problem is he’s given up draft capital for garbage.

Anyway, to answer the original question posed, if there are repercussions I’d say whatever he wants and accept his millions in salary. If there is truly an open environment I’d say there is actually little chance they can go all the way and go into a rebuild and reevaluate year after year until they get an elite talent through the draft. Then you start adding from there. Until then, it’s yes man garbage selling lies to fans.

Imagine taking over a team struggling to make the playoffs, no blue chip prospects, and with some of the worst contracts in the league; and the benchmark for which are going to be judged is winning the Stanley Cup within 3 years of taking over?

I don't take the job.

I would. And I’d start taking notes for the next job and my severance package.

Then why do you follow the team if that is how you see it? Seriously curious.

Don't most GMs make around $1.5 million per year?

Regardless of the team, it seems like a fairly good job to have...

Why, because I don't think it's realistic to turn it into a Stanley Cup contender within 3 years? Like you can't be a fan unless you think everything is awesome, even when it isn't, like what Oiler fans do?

Ohh, someone is defensive and testy! I simply asked if you see the franchise as so negative then why are you so involved with them with your time? If you can't answer the question thats fine but it is nothing to get all persnickety about.

Isn't this pretty much exactly what I alluded to? The drafting has been good, so good that I think Treliving taking draft picks away from the amateur staff to trade for the pros that they did was the wrong move. Based on their performance, I bet this team would be much further ahead/achieved more had they just kept the draft picks instead.

I tell him I'm keeping Sutter for at least one more full season while evaluating the team before potentially selling or adding at the deadline. I think that's what any new gm coming in would/should do.
In terms of longterm vision I'm building the team from the net out. Start with getting Wolf some games next season, I would move Markstrom if possible, but likely end up shipping out Vladar. Probably shopping Hanifin too but not gonna tell Edward's that. Lastly firing Mueller and bringing up Love. Our team will win the cup based on having the best coach and goalie in the league.
