Not sure why the Toffoli quotes are being used as a gotchya. Both things can be true. Tyler can be the type of guy that isn't bothered by Sutter, or able to tune out some it and take forward what he needs. Others likely don't/can't (Valimaki etc).
He also came up under Sutter like he said so his methos are probably nothing new to him, and to some of the new guys its coming as a bit of a shock.
He's probably at the point when a chair is tossed he knows its just Darryl being Darryl.
The quotes from Doughty and Williams probably ring true for a guy like Huberdeau and Kadri. They might need positive reinforcement but who knows what is happening in the locker room.

It's shocking to me that a no nonsense coach who has a rather pointed communication style has different players who react differently to that style and that the level of success at any particular time also might influence the players' reactions.

Honest question, would the goalies look so bad if the D system was not such a #### show? That is on coaching.

You put a Mike Smith in net this year and this is a playoff team. And I am not a fan of Smith at all!
This is what he said about the system not being an issue.
LA and Seattle have pretty poor save % and are in a playoff spot. They actually have a worse team save % and LA stomped us the other night.

Honest answer.
If you think goaltending has been adequate then we have very different opinions.
We saw Markstrom crater in the playoffs last year after a stellar season and it carried over for at least 3/4 of a season this year. Did Sutter change the D system when his kid was born? Because he had several good games after that.
Most stats show the Flames in the top of the league in minimizing high danger chances against.
Which is funny seeing how many odd man rushes and breakaways we give up almost every game. I don't care what the advance stats say, anybody who watches the games see it.

There are a lot of things Sutter can be criticized for, but providing a solid defensive system isn't one of them. That is like the one thing his teams never struggle with.
If the players can't execute that, that is a player issue.

It's a two-way street. He's being rewarded by the coach because he's playing well. I'm not sure how that's a negative.
Sutter has always been the type of guy that you have to earn your icetime and it still holds true for some players this year, but he definitely does not do this as much as he used to. Lucic is a perfect example, he has not earned or played well enough this year to be a regular in the lineup. Yet is almost always there, sometimes being given 2nd line minutes.
It would be tough to be a player in that room, being told you need to earn your ice time, and continually losing a spot to Lucic who has not been earning his ice time in 90% of his games this year.
If you are going to roll with the attitude/sturcture, of your play determines your spot, it has to hold true for everyone, or it just does not work.
Assuming Calgary did decide to move on from Sutter, who do Flames fans think would be the ideal coaching candidate? The AHL coach or an external hire?
Andrew Brunette, Dave Tippett, Alain Vigneault and Barry Trotz (Trotz said an original 6 team would interest him so he is out) are some names who are looking for jobs for next year.

Knowing this team, if they are still paying Sutter millions for the next couple of seasons, they are going to go with a bargain bin coach. That seems to be the pattern, so likely they promote the AHL guy. Mitch Love probably deserves a shot anyway though, so I wouldn't be too disappointed if that is what happens. If not him, then Kirk Muller since he is already on the payroll.

This is what always gets me.
I don't care what measurable stats say, I know more by what I can remember...
Blaming Sutter for poor defensive structure makes no sense. That's the one area he's known for league wide.
Trotz is out as he's the next GM of the Preds, were you thinking Bruce Boudreau?
I think Sutter is liked by players that he likes, but his gruff approach is only going to make things worse when things aren't going well. He seems to have turned the venom up to 11 this season and as a result he's toxic.
I seriously believe that his refusal to give credit to the team when they were actually playing well to start the season followed by his bizarre shake up after the first loss to the Oilers had the team asking questions. His comment about Huberdeau having to take a #### likely really rubbed a lot of the team the wrong way and it's been downhill from there. But there is a marked point where the team clearly decided they'd had enough of him was the Pelletier press conference.
Sutter is a demanding guy, but when things aren't going well his only response seems to be to whip harder and yell more. The stories of the lack of communication and the failure to name a captain (Backlund) have made it impossible for this team to listen to him continually call them ####.
Have the players played like ####? Yes, absolutely, but I think they're just getting crushed and they hate coming to play.
