The 1st round pick is a sunk cost. It doesn't matter.

I think that lots of the regret about Valimaki is due to Kyllington being away. He really had a great year last year.

There is a reason one guy was picked in the 1st round and another went undrafted. For a team that got significantly older in the offseason and with neither guy having a great training camp it was the wrong call. Seeing how injuries went this year Valimaki would have had a solid opportunity here.

Cap considerations play into it though too. 1.55 v. 900K I think

But more importantly Juuso was drafted 6 years ago. Why he was drafted there no longer matters, what matters is how he's progressed since.

Again it's a sunk cost. The 1st was spent. It doesn't matter. You make the best decision with the information you have now. And they decided Mackey was the guy to keep. Which is looking like the wrong call but not because Juuso was drafted in the 1st 6 years ago. That's irrelevant.

Valimaki was at a point of regression with the Flames. Whether that's his fault or the team's fault for not developing him they made the right call to risk losing him. No point in banging their head against the wall with him because his future with this franchise was going down the toilet. Now he gets an opportunity with another team to prove he belongs in the NHL.

Sutter may have not given a lot of young players a real shot in the preseason, but Valimaki did get a fair shot and he sucked.

He was very noticeable during preseason games and not in a good way.

Good for him for finding a place in Arizona.

Funny how he ended up in Arizona, I always thought his style and ceiling was Ekman-Larsson.

It also appeared that Valimaki had issues dealing with adversity which resulted in decreased confidence in his abilities. While I believe that most of that was internally driven, instead of pushing through Valimaki seemed to wilt under the pressure.

He is currently playing in a zero-adversity environment and performing very well. It's really hard to definitively say what he is until you see him in an adverse environment again (whether internally generated or otherwise).

It's this. He is playing with about as much pressure as house league right now. I'll be interested to see how he handles it once that inevitably changes. He is playing next year on a near minimum contract so unless he is satisfied with that (and maybe he is), there is at least some pressure to show he deserves more.

A star season? 24 points and a -9 is trending towards a star season?

He was terrible in training camp. Only problem was keeping Mackey over him

You need to read that through your Coyotes goggles.

Seeing as all of our young players had terrible training camps and then the team went on to be garbage all season...maybe there's a problem with how the team positions younger players and runs training camps? Perhaps there's a problem with how the team/coaching staff assess players and build their lineups?

I don't want to overly downplay his season but pretty well every player on that roster has to be evaluated with a grain of salt because of the expectations (none) and the reality that most players on the roster would have lesser roles on good teams. I'm happy that he's found a place but I don't believe the Flames missed out by losing him on waivers as he would have been alternating in and out of the lineup as the 6/7th defenseman on the Flames.

Agree.
Add Sonny Milano to that list of bad training camp/better season than some of the players kept on the team
