I'm assuming the plan is next spring they sell off the UFAs if they're in the same position, because they're still sold on the group's potential and want to give it a second chance

But you JUST know if the situation is the same they'll retain a few of them just in case playoffs happen, and those UFAs will walk a couple months later for zilch

Players have more value when there's an extra year of term. Should have taken advantage of the madness earlier this week. Although not mathematically, it's been intellectually over for about 9-12 days now

A 1-2 round exit this or next year will not be worth what they'll surrender in talent that they could have plucked from this draft. So near-sighted

The players tied everyone’s hands by not getting things done. They gave them a chance and they shot the bed.

100% on the players for underperforming. They better all be looking in the mirror this offseason.

That third period vs a tired Toronto team was the saddest "season on the line" push I've ever seen from a team

Exhibition level intensity, save for 3-4 minutes at the end

You're be BSing if you told me that's the best each guy in this group could bring to the table. They didn't care

This is what Treliving wants to gamble on for another year. It's asinine

Treliving is not gambling on that another year. Either Sutter is gone or Tre is gone in 20 games. Whoever picks up the pieces gets basically a 7 year rebuild starting next summer. Best case scenario one crack at the can if they sell the farm, but at the expense of riding all these guys to F/A and losing them for nothing...

The core are signed long term, there won’t be any rebuild

Question is if they can get enough pieces to compete.

Only if you think the core is only Huberdeau, Weegar and Kadri. 6 UFA's after next season. Andersson is probably the only other core player signed past next season.

Players with more term sometimes have more value. But at the TDL they often are harder to move - less deals for retention, less cap room, and less flexibility for acquiring teams. The contenders usually want hired guns for the POs or short term depth.

The only significant players with term who I can recall were moved were Chychrun (a hockey deal for a guy who wanted out) and Hronek (just a weird deal).

EDIT - forgot Ekholm but I doubt Calgary was making a trade with the OIlers for a pick.
