For my sanity as a Flames fan, I do hope I'm right. This season has tested my frustration levels.

Good press conference by Treliving. He seemed emotional to me at the start of it. Not easy to remain as composed as he was, definitely.
Glad that the Ritchie brothers were chuckling about the trade. Good to hear.
According to Treliving, trading away Brett opens up a spot for Walker. What he didn't mention was what bringing in Nick does - reading between the lines, it takes Lucic out? Will be interesting to see who rotates with whom. Assuming paperwork and travel happens, I assume Stecher will play tomorrow, but Ritchie I am not so sure. However, I am betting that he does well in this system, but I am not sure if he is fit enough for Sutter's system.
Treliving addressed teams calling on players with non-expiring deals, for futures, but he didn't think the values were there. Fair enough.

I have to think we could have landed 2 more first round picks this week. Ugh.

They aren't a great team, but they've lost 24 one goal games with .889 goaltending. They should be sitting comfortably in a playoff spot right now at least.

Who says they don't re-sign them. Just because Gaudreau and Tkachuk left like that doesn't mean others will. He extended Gio, Backlund, Huberdeau, Weegar, Zadorov.
Lindholm, Zadorov and Toffoli have no NTCs, and Backlund, Tanev and Hanifin have significantly weaker ones than Gaudreau. I think Treliving has a much easier time with all of these guys in either extending or trading them, whether it's offseason or next TDL.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when Brad was talking with GM's. Just to hear the offers being made and or rejected.

I like that he is focused on the long term; no big trades today, but ground work laid

What a difference a year makes. Last year Duthie and the TSN panel picked the Flames to win the Cup.

I find comments like difficult to follow.
If we could have, to make the team overall better, I think we would have.
But, let's say we could have received one first found pick for Elias Lindholm, and nothing else, and one for Mikael Backlund, and nothing else, and both picks were teams in the 25-32 overall range.
Great. We got two first round picks.
Are we better now or in the near future? I would say no.

Same. With all the rumours we were hearing, I have no doubt that those conversations Treliving was having will continue into the draft. We know some trade talks have taken months, just because nothing happened today doesn't mean nothing is going to happen

And trades like those are easier to just say than do. I think there are 4-5 legit contenders. TB, Boston, Colorado, NJD (maybe). You can add a name or two but the point's the same. Of those, only the Avs need a 2C, and if they really were hungry they'd have gone and gotten a Sam Bennett.

Sounds like the they were being low balled for their guys with term. Like when we sold Bouwmeester a year to early. I don't think trading any of them for an extra late 1st rounder would have been worth it. Looking at the draft board the only teams with their 1st and some cap room remaining are Seattle, and Carolina. Seattle wasn't going to give up futures which left only Carolina, who probably low balled. That pick is probably in the 27 range.

Carolina got Puljujarvi and the Ghost. Who needs more than that?

True. Looking at their cap after all that, Flames would have had to retain as well. No way could they have gotten value for the player or cap retention for that player from Carolina.

The time to pull trades was a week ago, when the contenders were still doing their shopping. That seemed to wrap up a few days ago. Waiting until the trade deadline was risky at best, except for bit parts.
That said, I still like today's moves a bit more than that one season where we trade a 7th for Freddy Modin. Blargh.

Carolina is one team that could use a 2C like Lindholm or Backlund. OTOH do they really think they are that close? Their goaltending is mediocre, they aren't really high powered offensively. They need to unload Burns.

Is Nick a better skater than Lucic?
If so punt Lucic to the pressbox and just run Ritchie 2.0 - Lewis - Duher.
Also dumb we are sitting a natural C and having a winger plug in as a C because Sutter.

I actually don’t blame Brad for not budging on what was likely a high ask for Lindholm or any of the 2024 UFA’s. Might as well play hardball than accept whatever you can just to make a trade. The big decision regarding those 2024 UFA’s will be made either this summer or by next year’s trade deadline

Connor Mackey is literally the worst D in the league this year - nearly 7 GA/60 5v5.
