Yeah NJ managed to keep their top prospects and are likely giving up very late 1sts for the next two seasons.
Can see why they were suddenly comfortable not having an extension in place.

It's a lot of stuff but none of the prospects are likely to be top of the line-up players.
NJ did well to not have to give them Holtz or Mercer.

Makhamadullin is a pretty good prospect, plus 2 firsts is nice. I don't know anything about the other guys.

Full trade:
https://www.nhl.com/devils/news/meie...se/c-341548510
Quote:
The New Jersey Devils today acquired forwards Timo Meier, Timur Ibragimov, defensemen Scott Harrington, Santeri Hatakka, goaltender Zachary Emond and a fifth-round pick (originally Colorado's selection) in the 2024 NHL Draft via trade with the San Jose Sharks in exchange for New Jersey's first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft (conditional), defensemen Shakir Mukhamadullin and Nikita Okhotiuk, forwards Andreas Johnsson and Fabian Zetterlund, a conditional second-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft and a seventh-round selection in 2024. San Jose will retain 50% of Meier's 2022-23 salary as part of the trade.
|
Quote:
he conditions on the draft picks are as follows:
San Jose Receives New Jersey's 2023 First-Round Pick: If the pick is a top-two selection, New Jersey will instead transfer their own 2024 first-round pick.
San Jose Receives Conditional 2024 Second-Round Pick: Should New Jersey reach the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals (and Meier plays in at least 50% of Meier's Club's Playoff games in 2023) or the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals, New Jersey will transfer its own first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft to San Jose (top 10 protected), instead of its own second-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft. If New Jersey's first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft is a top 10 selection, New Jersey will have the option to instead transfer its own first-round pick in 2025 NHL Draft to San Jose. Should New Jersey transfer its first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft per the original condition (top-two above in Condition A), New Jersey will instead transfer its own first-round pick in 2025 NHL Draft should they reach the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals.

Wow. Lots of assets to get Meier.
Glad the Flames will not be doing anything like that.

They gave up quantity for quality and got stronger. The east looks scary with all the teams looking to get better...I would be calling every team in the east playoff race right now and asking them how they plan to keep up. Buffalo, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and the Islanders are all fighting for the last 2 wildcard spots. All those teams have needs to address, even Carolina could use some help. Backlund would look good in Buffalo, Detroit, Pittsburgh, or Carolina.

Only one first. I believe the other is a 2nd that would be a first if the Devils get to the conference finals in 2024.

Huh?
Who cares if the Devils get swept or win the Cup? Good for them, if they do win. The problem for us is what the Sharks are getting back.
Why they traded Meier and re-signed Hertl is beyond my brain capacity.

Interesting. A new twist to the conditional picks. Playing in a conference final next year with no guarantee they still have the player. It’s a bit of extra odds for San Jose to up the NJ 2nd to a 1st.

The two main prospects are both trending towards being regular nhlers, so there is some cost certainty there, even if it isn't high end.

The 1sts and Zetterlund and Mukhamadullin is a pretty good haul for an unsigned Meir.
