My brother works for a county outside of town, and he was saying today they were hit for the second time in a month. Thursday or Friday night there were 15 trucks lined up but the cleaning crew showed up after a couple cats were cut out, and they were spooked off. Doesn't sound like there's is a long-term solution at their place.

I don’t believe for a second City fleet is replacing with resonators. Some goofball jacked the resos instead of the cats once, that was funny albeit inconvenient.

I still dont understand who is buying all these cats. Like 99% of the cats coming into the scrap shops are clearly stolen, how hasn't this been stopped at all?

You have to wonder with that being the legal case for theft at shops, how many of these thefts are inside jobs or inside adjacent jobs, especially at the less reputable places.

This is one of those times where "thoughts and prayers" is actually the acceptable response.

Who the eff is buying them? Shouldn't the buyers record all the info from the sellers?

They kept stealing them from the Enterprise Cube trucks where I rent twice a month, and there was a point where they had 7 from the fleet offline.

They are sold / junked for the precious metals.

They have platinum , palladium and rhodium

Which are all very pricy

A guy doesn't deserve to lose his life over trying to steal someone's cat converter.

But there is something poetic about a criminal being served karmic justice then and there.

But something more along the lines of this:

I know that but what junk yards are buying them? and shouldn't they get all personal info and pics before paying for them?

I think most of these are more organized than a guy stealing one and selling ti at a scrap dealer. Big operations will be dissembling them first to get rid of the steal, smaller ones toss them in shipping containers and move them out of the country. My guess, anyway.

So putting a VIN on them would do absolutely nothing?

Highly doubt it. I'm sure there are some individuals doing small numbers, but they can just grind off the vin before selling them, and claim they are a home mechanic. My dad replaced his himself, and sold the old ones to a scrap dealer without much issue.

Saw the thread title and thought the discussion was about theft specifically at the airport

Speaking of which a friend of our had his stolen while parked at the airport parkade about a month ago. At least the Airport Authority was nice enough to waive his parking charges.

What putting a VIN on them might do is if you catch someone with a converter with a VIN on it, you could contact the owner of the vehicle and find out if the person arrested actually has the right to the converter. If he doesn't, then they can be charged with possession of stolen property. As of now, if you have a converter in your possession it's hard to fully determine if they actually possess a stolen converter. I mean, we know they do have a stolen converter, but charging them is another matter.

As I posted earlier, that happened to me, I had to file a 2nd claim.

In the end, it was my choice to leave the car at the dealership. I could have driven it home and driven it back when it was ready to be worked on instead of leaving it there overnight.

Is it an inside job? probably not, i talked to the guy and he gave me a discount on parts. The problem sometimes is that the landlord doesn't allow the garage to be locked up and the parking might be shared by many dealerships. In case of fire etc...
