Honestly, if Markstrom were presented with an out, I wonder if he wouldn't want it. Fresh start.

The sweetner would be at least a 1st round pick.
Phoenix does not usually pick up larger contracts.

Why panic and sell low on Markstrom. For once, the Flames need to sell high.
Toffoli is on pace to destroy his career high in points.
Backlund is on pace for only his 2nd 50-point season.
Would suck to see these guys go, but if we sell they should be prime guys to sell on.
Tanev too. He's great but for how long?
Why give away Markstrom when he likely bounces back next year?

I don't think they'll sell in season. Whomever the GM is in the summer may want to look at it though.

I used to think Waddell was a dud (maybe he is and Tulsky is the brains), but I’m thinking their framework might be worth copying.
No rentals.
Don’t trade away picks unless it’s for something long term.
Limit contract valuation/term and walk away from a player if you have to
Don’t overpay for goalies.
Helps obviously when you draft some studs, but just being more disciplined around trades and contracts might be a really really good thing.

A proposal that likely wouldn’t happen, but a thought:
Would you do Markstrom for Zaitsev? Assuming Ottawa was that desperate for a goalie? Would we add because of the extra two years?

It is similar to how Chevaldayoff manages as well. He used to get roasted all the time for holding tight, but it is hard to argue that he hasn't done a decent job building a good team in what is arguably the least desirable market to play in out of any North American pro sports league. He might be one of the most underrated GMs in the league.

I would rather have 22/23 Vladar and the 6M in cap space if we can send Markstrom to Arizona.

I would do it. The buyout on Zaitsev next year is palatable if necessary. There's no way out of Markstrom.
I disagree thoroughly on potential for rebound. LOL even.

I'd do Markstrom for Zaitsev. That said seasoned goaltenders usually can rotate in the summer. It might be better to move him in the off-season to a team depending on the UFA chaos in July.

If the Flames didn't have to retain on Markstrom, yeah I'd consider it.
Is Markstrom more Hellebuyck or Salo? Thats the question I guess.

I'd settle for making vladar the starter and working out a deal in the summer to move markstrom
But make vladar the starter

He could definitely be bought out he is in year 3 of the deal and year 4 they likely see if he can bounce back. If not the buyout the last year of the deal

Guessing you would try to roll it up as part of a larger trade that involved Chychrun.
AZ: Markstrom, Kylington, Coronato, 2023 1st, 2024 3rd
Cal: Vejmelka, Chychrun
Then I would try to offload Hanifin to secure back a 2023 1st pick

But you aren't getting $6M. You may have to retain, and you are certainly getting salary back.
I look at it this way: Flames are paying $6.75M for two goalies. Next year $8.2M. That's not bad as long as one plays well and the other is backup capable, which even Markstrom is right now.
And Markstrom, more than some replacement, is capable of being good again. Bobrovsky tends to bounce between being very good and not, and this may be Markstrom's pattern. Or maybe he's Cary Price 2021 - not good regular season and then found the old game in the POs.
And if he bounces back some but you still don't trust him, THEN you sell.

Pagnotta saying that there is news this morning that Calgary has started discussions on Boeser again. Maybe a Schenn/Boeser package.

I don’t think Markstrom is a capable NHL goalie at this time.
As good as Vladar may be this season, he’s still not at the level of being a good starter.
I don’t think you trade either. I think you ride their mediocrity out, and it will be one of the reasons that you’re generally a bad NHL team. It’s perfect for a rebuild.
If this team wants to win a Stanley Cup in the next 4 seasons (including this one), then yeah…it’s not looking good.
