I'll check in in about an hour. Of course as soon as I say something my inbox and phone light up with real-world stuff.

Noob post, but did the tournament start? I've been monitoring the app, but I don't see any game that started? I don't want to be the hold up if we did get started!

Doesn't look like it has started, no. It says the start date is today, though. Not sure if it needs the organizer to hit a button to start it or something?

So ... what the hell has happened here? Why is chess having this moment? Why are all of my middle school students suddenly obsessed with their Elo ratings? Seriously, back in December this was not a thing, now it's constant. I went and bought two cheap $10 magnetic chess sets to have in my classroom just last week based on the demand.
Is it the lingering impact of butt-plug-gate?
Is there some other cultural, chess-related thing going on?
Did it just break into the zeitgeist somehow and suddenly all my students know what the "italian game" is?

Hard to say. I would blame it on the Queen’s Gambit but that came out almost three years ago, didn’t it? I can’t really explain it otherwise. I’ve played chess since I was a kid, but I don’t remember it ever being “popular.”

I think esports, social media and the quarantine has helped chess a lot. Heck even dungeons and dragons is somewhat popular again. Things that used to be niche seem to have a new platform

You know, my son is finishing grade 6, and I’ve been worried all year about my nerdy, chess-and-DND-loving kid getting eaten alive in junior high…..
Maybe this culture shift will come along at a good time for him….

In hind sights I should have made it so only 1 player advances making the second round only have 3 instead of a beefy 6. My bad.

I might be getting wrecked by some kid in middle school, but please just keep that to yourself if it’s the case!

So Superfraggle has drawn first blood in CalgaryPuck Daily Tournament II:
https://www.chess.com/analysis/game/...3?tab=analysis
Superfraggle is a London player, so no surprise to see “Doozre” go with that opening again. Very solid opening from both players, that basically transposed into a Queen’s gambit declined/Nimzo-Indian, with black exchanging the dark square bishop for white’s pawn on e3.
Karim then got an early advantage, first winning a pawn won a pawn with 10. Nxc3, and then trading knights and forcing white to capture back with the king and concede castling rights (12. Nd2, Nxd2 - threatening White’s queen on b3, and 13. Kxd2 is basically forced).
Things looked good for black until later in the mid game, when white won a rook with 17 … Qf6, 18. Ke1, Rb8, 19. Bxb8.
Black was still in it for a while after that—it was a good fight between two strong players. Doozre finished it off with some style though, finding a nice tactic with 25. Be5, after which Qh5 is very menacing due to the absolute pin on the g7 pawn. After that, Qxh6 leaves black with no good options other than trading queens.
Very fun game to look at.

I didn’t see that rook being in trouble. As, I think it it was butterfly, said in my other game: “it is like Kadri passing the puck to the opponent’s stick”
