I do agree they’d be battling for the top right now with those two but that’s partly because the gap between 1-5 just isn’t that big right now. Still I think that line was a bit too one dimensional to really compare to other top lines like Colorado or a couple others. I agree it’s likely the best line Calgary has ever had and they were likely a top three line last year but too many warts in their game for me to call them the best.
Yes obviously, there’s no scientific way for me to adjust for diminished stamina, so I went with the more basic easy route. But my point still remains, their efficiency was on another level.

Also, I think they were pretty multi-faceted, they were effective playing any style. They produced in tight checking games, wide open games, they could check for their chances, cycle, score on the rush and even when they were buried in dzone faceoffs, they killed plays quickly and got on the counter attack.

Lastly, I think their playoffs stats would’ve looked a lot more impressive if they weren’t stone walled so often by Jake Oettinger. Honestly, It would’ve been nice to see these guys get more chances in the post season together, if only they had been united earlier.

I had one takeaway tonight that I haven’t seen mentioned or appreciated

Backlund engaged beast mode on a second period PK tonight and it was delightful

It isn't working.

The contract and cap situation means our players aren't going anywhere. So get rid of the GM and Coach and see if someone else can make something better of this situation.

Treliving may have pulled off a genius move in the summer, but he subsequently took way too much risk with the contracts. High risk leads to high reward but can also result in devastating consequences when you get it wrong. There was a complete lack of prudence following the acquisition and this destroyed the culture and capability within the team.

He should've waited to see how things shook out - we had a massive opportunity either way. If it worked - hand out the massive contract - if it didn't we had cap space that is the stuff of dreams and a plethora of picks.

Now we potentially have the bulk of eight years of this. Combined with the arena situation, this has the potential to be an existential risk in terms of a hockey team in this city.

My condolences to HockeyNinja and Cowboy 89 for having to sit through that live.

Awful hockey from start to finish by both teams.
Eh, I enjoyed my trips to Detroit and Columbus even though they played bad both games. Being able to experience other team’s arenas and interacting with other teams fans is great. Little Ceasers arena is nice and they had a lot of great historic displays for the Red Wings and Pistons I got pictures of. I’m gonna plan to travel to Pittsburgh and watch the boys play there next year

Backlund has been the best forward on the team this year.

That’s what happened when you can’t evaluate talent and use hockeydb as your primary source of information

Backlund is definitely one of the most consistent players. You get the same solid effort each game. Nothing fancy.

The team really needs more Backlunds. Inconsistency is this team’s biggest problem.

The Flames is basically the same team. They are just missing the 2 stars that carried the team last year. They no longer have a legit first line let alone a line that can carry the team when needed

The new guys are a fraud. False advertising.

5. Tanev - big value
6. Zadorov - probably worth a 2nd

Those are good pieces to kick off a rebuild with.

From the 6 above, you could likely extract three 1st round picks, some prospects, and a 2nd (or two) alongside a depth pick. That’s a good spot to start
Lucic isn’t getting you anything at this point.

What exactly is “big value” going to get you. Looks like you’re trading the foundation of the team and keeping the high priced underperformers.

Not sure what that accomplishes.

Huberdeau, Kadri and Weegar are not tradable

I don’t agree with that. But you’d probably have to retain some salary with Huberdeau and Weegar.

Question is which is worse. The dead cap space or keeping them.

I’d rather have Tanev, Hanifin and Zadorov then Weegar. I’d rather have Lindholm than Huberdeau.

At this point, the Flames could back into the playoffs because the Wild seem to be trying to back out, but they do not look good. That’s why I think they need to maintain the status quo at the deadline while inviting offers to see if anyone will give valuable futures for any of their veterans. We’re already down 5 picks over the next 3 years, the prospect pool has three legit prospects with Pelletier in the NHL (1G, 2F), the lineup is old and getting older, and the Flames are basically in a cap pinch next year.

Who is the other forward? Ruzicka? Duehr?

If you’re asking me, Coronato, Zary and Wolf are the three prospects I was thinking of.

Also, Ruzicka and Duehr are 23 and 25. The developmental pathway is getting pretty short for them to still be prospects, although some maturity might help Ruzicka quite a bit given his skill set.

I’m also highly interested to see what happens with Coronato on or after March 1…Maybe we’re down to 2 by my count?

Another wasted good goaltending effort, both Markstrom and Vladar have been unlucky this year with a lack of run support. Vladar was big early and also through the bulk of the second period penalty kills. On defence I thought Hanifin raised his game in Rasmus’ absence with urgency in his rushes and first passes. I think the fourth line really misses the speed of Duehr, in fact if it wasn’t for Dube and Pelletier those forward lines would a half step behind the play pretty consistently.

The game was emblematic of the season. Close game, some exciting moments, some good saves, Backlund being great, but just nothing to really make you think it’s a special team.

Completely understandable to have lost faith in the franchise. Also completely understandable to expect them to win their division next year. It's a mentally abusive relationship. And when it gets to that point, you should get out.

I feel like I can predict their fate year after year. The joy is gone. Stubbornness remains.
