Don't worry, China's ambassador will tell us that how dare we involve ourselves in China's interest in Canada

There's currently a USAF RC-135U Combat Sent up just east of Kansas City. I wonder if it is shadowing the balloon to gather any electronic intel?

I mean...is a regular bazooka for some reason insufficient?

What is this balloon made of exactly that is 'regular bazooka resistant?'

This seems like more of a "buy the boys at the local Army base a bunch of beer and some lawn darts and they'll have this sorted by lunch" kind of scenario.

That balloon is up somewhere like 60,000'. You'll need that super-bazooka to get it!

Space Force not doing it's job, should have had shark-mounted lasers at the ready.

I watched the report on CNN yesterday and the guy they were interviewing said that these spy balloons are actually a fairly regular occurrence. I think this one was just a little more alarming because it flew over a pretty sensitive site and the implication that they are collecting the information to sell to Russia. I bet these are likely also some of the UAP reported over the course of a year.

I do wonder why they don't just shoot it down though while it was over a low-density area. I guess you could set it up to collect erroneous information if you are aware of it.

They can be tricky to shoot down.

The research balloon was measuring ozone levels above Canada, the Associated Press reported at the time. It went rogue in August 1998, passing across Canada, over the Atlantic Ocean, and through British airspace before entering Iceland's airspace and then drifting northward.

Two Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 fighter aircraft spotted the balloon over Newfoundland and fired more than 1,000 rounds at it. The AP reported that the jets, Canadian variants of the American F/A-18 Hornet, hit the balloon, but rather than popping or exploding and crashing to the earth, it slowly began leaking helium. The big balloon was still in the air.

Yep, so they are deferring to the much crappier, lower resolution balloons for now to spy with!

My son and I had a copy of this thread as a conversation earlier.. his conclusion was that a "spy balloon" is the dumbest thing ever and either it's really just some scientist's research balloon gone amok or China is trolling everyone.

I tended to agree, I mean if they shoot it down they would see all the spy gear.

I guess unless the spy gear was triggered to fall off on command leaving innocent research equipment.. the perfect spy balloon!

Why would China use a spy balloon when it has satellites?
