I see the Panthers as having extended their period of having top young players who can potentially contend and got someone to add some more swagger to a leadership group that might have been seen as a bit soft after last year. The Flames went all-in on near-term opportunity with a potentially ugly future in a couple of years. Neither move was unreasonable. If the Flames don't get some great results this year or next, it looks bad for them. The Panthers have longer to get the results they want from the trade.

You are trying way too hard. "way worse spot"?

Both teams are third in the race for two wild card spots. 9th in the conference.

Panthers have been moving up in the standings.

I get that some "fans" seemingly want Florida to succeed to prove a point. That's annoying. But come on, the two teams spot in the standings are very similar, why argue that?

Come on now...look at the actual standings. On points percentage the Panthers are tied for 11th

Flames are 5 points out of a divisional spot with 2 games in hand
Panthers are 8 points out of a divisional spot giving up 3 games

Flames are 4 points behind the Oilers with one in hand
One point behind Minny. Tied with the Avs. The teams behind the Flames don't have 3 games in hand

Panthers are 3 points out of the only team in a spot they could realistically catch giving up 2 games. Buffalo is two back of the Panthers with 3 games in hand. Islanders are tied with them. Even Detroit is 5 back of them with 3 in hand.

I don't have to try very hard to show the Flames are in a far better situation...there are way more teams currently in a playoff position they could realistically catch and less teams just behind them with multiple games in hand.

"Flames division and conference are easier"

yeah no ####...that's why the Flames with MORE points and LESS games played are in a far better position to make the playoffs

Wow ok. They’re both 9th. It looks like on points percentage, one is 9th and one is 10th (tied). That seems similar to me, maybe that changes tonight.

If you have to resort to calling them tied for 11th that kind of tells me you’re trying to distort the numbers for some reason. Why take the Panthers standings so personally?

You are the one arguing the facts, they have more teams close to them behind and fewer close above

Flames have far more teams they could reasonably pass for a spot and aren't giving up games to all those teams

Math

I hope the Panthers keep playing well with all their western games coming up but they are in really tough for playoffs. Too many teams and most either have games in hand or are too far up

Every betting site agrees that the Flames are in a better spot right now for this season but I'm just a homer

Sabres now tied with the Panthers with 3 in hand

Tkachuk is still the best player in the deal.

Are there any former player updates or are the same 3 poeple going to continue to yell at each other and never move on.

Treliving got Huberdeau, Weegar, a 1st and a good prospect for a guy only willing to go to 4 teams and point blank telling him he was out neutering any and all leverage.

To try and retroactively pretend the Flames screwed this up is laughable- at best.

Remember when Iginla neutered them? They got…… nothing……

That was his choice. The GM also signed him to the deal that walked him to free agency.

The deal looked good at the time

At this point, unless Huberdeau and Weegar turn around quickly, it’s a 24 yrs old superstar for a couple overpaid older guys

And 12th in the east on points percentage...behind the Wings now too

Am I allowed to say they are in a bad spot yet?

Sam Bennet with two pretty goals last night, back to back, and one for each team.

Yeah no.

Mackenzie Weegar is 6th in the league for xGA60 for defenseman that have played 350+ minutes.

He's around 30th in cap hit.

You're way way out to lunch there.

Huberdeau is a above average forward that will be overpaid next season if he doesn't find another level. His current production level in an off season has him in line with about a $5M salary.

At least he's a good dude, and he's not what Vancouver is dealing with.

There is something about our defensemen that makes them less than the sum of the parts.

Rasmus, Hanifin, Tanev, Weegar, Zadorov all seem to be good value for their contracts. Each has their strengths and can play an all around game. All have ok to excellent advanced stats.

Then we play teams that are missing half their top 6 to injury and there is no discernible difference in what their back end brings. As good the defense should be, it doesn’t feel like they are winning enough games for us.
