Of course he knew Sutter wasn't going to like it. But that doesn't mean he shouldn't ask.

And that's totally fair. But by the same token, we shouldn't begrudge Sutter for having no patience for it.

Um, yeah, of course it's a key storyline. Where have you been the last week? Pelletier had been a topic of conversation here, on radio, podcasts, online coverage, everywhere.
That doesn't mean you ignore everything else about the game. But Pelletier's debut is an obvious storyline. It would be weird not to ask about it.

I tune into every Sutter presser for his sarcasm and occasional insight. It's must-watch content that fills me with delight with each snarky answer.
So I wasn't surprised Sutter reacted unfavourably to the Q. But it was still a question that needed to be asked.

With the amount of posts this thread has you'd think the flames just won the cup.

This has become a very angry, contentious message board, it's crazy. I don't even give too much of a **** about sports anymore and even I feel my blood pressure rise just reading threads here.
Not sure what happened, but I know humility is the key to a healthy life and there's like less than zero humility here amongst posters. Very little fun banter, very little self deprecating comments, just two sides pushing their agenda heavy and hard and with zero compromise. It's ugly on CP these days, and it's sad, cause I used to love it here.

Any takes on the game? Pretty good showing
A 180 from the Avs game. Can they just do that more?
Seems we need vladar in net to have a shot at 3+ goals for

Yep, the team plays way more confident in front of Vladar, the eye test shows that to me.

I really wonder what that's all about. I know it's easy to say they have more faith in Vladar so they play looser, but I don't know if that's actually the case

That's what I see, and it's happened on other teams in the past. Hell, I've experienced it in beer league even. You trust the last line of defence, you play more confident and the play ends up on the right side of the ice as a result.

The Valji stuff about all comes from the podcast where he said that off the record, earlier that same week, apparently Sutter said that Phillips was too small.
Whether it's true or not or the context of what Sutter said isn't the issue; beat reporters have an understanding and trust with the team they are covering that off the record means off the record.
If Valji is ignoring that understanding, Sutter isn't going to have any time for him, especially if Valji is already beating the "Sutter is stuck in the past, hates small young skilled players, is demanding control and because of that Treliving will leave to Toronto" schtick that he's concocted the past month or so...and to that end, makes sure he asks Sutter about the young skilled players as soon as he can spit it out of his mouth post game.

Isles game a couple weeks ago, Markstrom saved it on those two breakaways in the second period that would've made it at very least a one goal game, and, given the fragility of this team, that could've ended in an OT loss...instead, a multigoal win.

Perception matters, this can be a big nothing with our young guys or it can mean something to a select few. Regardless you have to conduct business with the media being at least conscious of it and Sutter has failed to do that this year. Yesterdays sound bite isn't the first this year that can potentially have a negative impact in terms of optics, especially with the younger generations mindset these days. Whether its a big nothing or not, its really unnecessary.

Not beating the lightening. The PK. Vladar? Dube’s clutch goal? Stopping a Slide?
Composure when the bolts scored? All of these are less important to a reporter than a ‘decent game’ quote about a rookie from Sutter.
I’d be surprised if anyone watches the resulting coverage. But hey if TSN makes their $4 off our market, go for it.

Prospects are interesting topics of conversation for readers.
Especially when those prospects have meaningful upside.
Especially when those prospects are former first round picks fans have followed for nearly five years.
Especially when for the organization that was the NHL debut of the first prospect drafted in 4.5 years.
It ain't rocket science. The game/win itself was nice, but has no real long term implication. That same opponent embarassed itself in Edmonton a couple days prior. It wasn't a four-point swing game in the standings. It wasn't a playoff game. It wasn't indicative of any long term turnaround. Stopping a slide is pretty meaningless in a season where the pattern is win two, lose two, win two, lose three, win two, lose two. Vladar's play has not elicited any excitement from the coach who will continue to roll Markstrom going forward (he enen implied as much when... asked about Vladar). Composure is a narrative that has more to do with outcomes in a chance based game than it does with itself - if a puck bounces off a referee's skate and the Lightning tie it up at 4-4 suddenly the Flames' composure is questioned. If Vasilevsky catches Dube's shot with his glove suddenly the Flames' composure is questioned.
The vast majority of questions media ask are already framed by narratives that try to explain simple or random results with complexity where there is none.
When it comes to prospects, that's an actual tangible topic of discussion that doesn't need some storyline about how the team banded together in the incredible complex task of glass n out and pucks deep and getting a bounce.
Why?
Because the prospect has the potential to impact winning long term, whereas this win does not affect future wins.

Sutter certainly provided a distraction ahead of Johnny Hockey night.
Only the guys in the room really know how to take this.

That's what should've happened in 2004 against the bleeping Lightning.
It was in!

Yeah it is pretty bad these days whether it be the Flames side or Off Topic. There should be no problem with people that have polar opposite opinions on any topic that's up for discussion but there seems to be zero tolerance and a lack of respect by both extremes. It seems like a sign of the times on social media where people have never been more divided. It's a shame because at the end of the day I think most of the posters at CP are good people that are simply getting sucked into the same circular arguments with posters they have deemed adversaries. I can't be the only person here that has nobody on ignore and has no issues skirting by posts that I don't fee warrants a response? It seems too many posters get fixated on the opinions of others rather than letting them have their say and just moving on with the discussion. I think we can all be better here as this is just forum banter and should not be so serious that it gets your blood boiling.

I don't think you can blame the reporter for asking the question, it's a pretty standard question when a rookie plays.
I understand Sutter's annoyance with it because he likes to talk team and not individuals and certainly not individuals that played 7 minutes.
He didn't need to take it where he took it and create this massive crap show we've all had to deal with in the last 24 hours.
But even taking it there it wasn't the big deal that it was made out to be in my opinion. It wasn't the personal slight to a hockey player that some have jumped to, it was an attempt at mocking a question that he didn't like.
Classy? No and honestly I'm tired of it too. But that's the extent of my outrage on the topic.

Personally, I thought Pelletier was pretty good in the first period.
