1. Not really...Pens have 3 in hand, Sabres have 3 in hand, Wings 3 in hand
2. Hardly relevant considering the situation each team was in

1) are the panthers more than 2 points out?
2) Well they both were elite regular season teams that choked in the playoffs last year right?

So they are 11th in the conference right now and the Flames are ninth. Both are bubble teams but the Panthers seem to be coming on (6-3-1 in their last 10 games). Should be an exciting finish.

About to be 4 giving up multiple games to multiple teams.

Flames already lost Gaudreau and were forced to make a move. How would people around here feel if the Flames didn't have a first for 3 years and were in 10th place?

Going from being the presidents trophy winners to being almost as good as the Flames this season with no first round pick BY CHOICE is not a good thing lol

Flames struggling doesn't mean the Panthers made a good decision...the teams are pretty irrelevant to each other they play twice a season and don't compete for playoff spots

Well neither team is probably where they want to be and have work to improve. The Panthers do have an absolute unicorn, year in and year out 100 point 25 year old power forward to build around along with a few other young pieces. The Flames have a good top 4 and a veteran forward group built to win now. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

It's not about Panthers vs. Flames is what you aren't getting

Young and building doesn't really mesh well with zero firsts, they went all in to win now and then kinda went win later....might be win never

If I had the top team in the league I would take multiple shots...not blow it up after the best season since 1995 because I lost to a 2 time champ in round 2.

Anyway my opinion...if the unicorn leads them to some kinda run bump this and say I told you so

They couldn’t afford to keep both Huberdeau and Weegar beyond this year and cashed in. Trading a 1st for 8 years of Tkachuk is justifiable their mistakes were the rentals last year.

They traded 1 winger and 1 Dman and that is blowing it up?

Lundell and Knight are 21. Tkachuk 25, Bennett and Ekblad are 26, Reinhart and Barkov are 27. You don’t think that core has any chance of improving?

LOL no. They traded away a star winger and a top pairing defenseman in addition to that draft pick. Even though they were due to become UFAs in the summer of 2023, trading them to Calgary meant giving up the ability to move them at the deadline for picks/prospects. The Panthers were not going to let those 2 walk to free agency.

2 core players, and they are struggling without them. Not quite a blowup but a major retooling.

Could they have gotten a better deal for Huberdeau and Weegar? Maybe, but I doubt they get a single player as good as Tkachuk. Not hard to see why Florida did it as they were obviously very reluctant to offer the contracts the Flames did.

If they were taking multiple shots at the cup like Dino suggests they were not trading them at the deadline and losing them for nothing like the Flames did with Gaudreau. They moved out a guy who will be 30 at the time of extension and another guy turning 30.

Moving them at the deadline wouldn’t return a franchise winger in his prime signed to a max term extension.

Florida did not have their top center or top Dman for 10 games each. Maybe that is a reason they are struggling?

Their D is pretty weak and they have 14.5 million tied up in goalies. That Bob contract is a killer. Imagine Markstrom making ten. They had another chance to go all in this year and traded it for Tkachuk.

At the end of the day, I would much rather have Florida's players than Calgary's players, even if they lack a defenceman or two. Bob contract is an anchor and Maurice isn't great but otherwise ...

Their top center and top D missed lots of games last season too

And again this isn't about Flames vs. Panthers

Panthers decided to re-tool will no firsts for 3 years after winning the presidents trophy

Personally I don't think it was a good move FOR THEM

I'm not sure how you build or supplement a contender with zero first round picks. We can go back and forth...they said they brought in Tkachuk to do better in the playoffs, let's see if that happens.

Kevin Rooney now has five points in 16 AHL games since clearing waivers, which really puts the "everyone in the NHL would be a star producer in the AHL" theory to bed.

It will just take time. He needs to add a little size and then he will be lighting it up in AHL.

You seem to think the lottery protected 1st they gave the Flames in the deal is some kind of death blow to their hopes of building for the future? Tkachuk had more goals and 7 less points than Huberdeau last year. I don’t get why you think it is a bad move for them when they were hard pressed to keep the players they moved out beyond their contracts this year?

You keep bringing up how bad Florida is this year but then when someone brings up the Flames are struggling in a similar way you say it isn’t about Florida vs Calgary. The Panthers lost multiple players to free agency, Duclair has been out the entire year. The more puzzling move was clearly the coaching hire.

Personally I would absolutely love if the Flames could trade Lindholm, Hanifin and a protected 1st for a 23 year old first line center who wanted to sign here for 8 years in the offseason instead of trying to sign 2 more older players to 8 year deals for massive raises.

You realize they traded 2 other firsts too right? Including 2023 unprotected. 2023, 2024, 2025 are all gone. Yeah that might sting a bit IMO

How the Flames are doing is irrelevant to if the Panthers made a good move...not sure how much more clear I can be. Their own GM said they made the move to be a better playoff team that could beat Tampa GL with that. It's revisionist history that this was a throw away season.

If you disagree that's fine, I think the Panthers should have kept their team together, they just won a presidents trophy and nobody wanted out. Teams often dominate the regulars season once or twice before getting over the playoff hump.

If you disagree that's fine

I do realize they pissed away 2 picks on Giroux and Charoit in horrible trades that got them a single series win. I just don’t get why they would be somehow still a top team with Huberdeau and Weegar than with Tkachuk? They couldn’t run it back as they couldn’t afford Marchment, Giroux or Chariot and Duclair was out.

I am not buying the point that the 2 players out are making them better than Boston, Toronto or Tampa this year. Running it back wasn’t an option they were losing multiple players last offseason and would have been hard pressed to keep the 2 players they traded to us beyond their contracts this year.

Florida is struggling this year but it has nothing to do with Tkachuk. The Flames are also struggling and a significant reason is due to Huberdeau not being anything close to a superstar.

We will disagree but there is nothing compelling in your argument as to why one more year with Huberdeau and Weegar would have Florida in a better spot than having Tkachuk does. Future year 1sts for rentals are among the worst moves a GM can make. Also firing a coach that helps a team win the Presidents trophy and replacing him with the coach with the most losses in the history of the NHL was another blunder. Trading for a franchise winger when he is 24 for 2 guys approaching 30 and the end of their contracts was not a bad move.
