Meanwhile Germany and others sit on their hands debating “escalation”
Germany's intransigeance has been screwing Ukrainians over since the start of the war. They've been one of the biggest roadblock to shipment of arms, other countries organizing for sanctions, and economic aid to Ukraine. Scholz's policy has screwed not only themselves, but Ukrainians as well and delayed themselves getting off Russian gas, etc. Which they could have done easier if they are started contingency planning at the start of the war rather than just when Russia decided to turn off the tap.
Scholz's sabotage on Leopard shipments is going to screw over the Ukrainians too and prevent German tank shipments this year. Rheinmetall is saying they will not be able to ramp up refurbishment of Leopard 1/2 tanks that they have in storage before the end of 2023. Its completely ridiculous.

Ukraine also desperately wants Leopard main battle tanks. How many of these can you supply?
Papperger: “We still have 22 Leopard 2 vehicles that we could prepare for use and deliver to the Ukraine. We still have around 88 vehicles from the Leopard 1. But we cannot repair these tanks without an order, as the costs are several hundred million euros. Rheinmetall cannot finance that in advance.”
How long would it take to restore the Leopard tanks?
Papperger: “Just under a year. The vehicles are not only repainted, but also have to be converted for use in war. They are completely disassembled and then rebuilt. This means that even if the decision is made tomorrow that we can send our Leopard tanks to Kyiv, delivery will take until the beginning of next year.”

Germany has the worlds worst history in loving the appearance doing good things and being "clean" but in reality they LOVE being in the filth and on the wrong side of history.
This is a strictly German and Germany level of thinking. After they literally decided to bully the EU into energy dealings with Russia, now they are putting up their hands as if they had nothing to do with this crisis. It's mind boggling and I hope the people in charge of these decisions are met with an afterlife that is fitting for their decisions.
Here is an interesting Vanity Fair article from 2011 and Germany's nasty role in the Euro Debt crisis from the early 2010's. Throw in the VW Diesel scandal and other issues, Germany loves the ****
Perun latest video is one of his better ones IMO, and very topical. Very informative and covers a lot of ground.
Some takeaways include
- Even in defensive trench warfare, APC's are extemely useful. When a unit of 200+ men can be dispersed on a line stretching to 2000+ meters (in part to avoid being easy pickings for artillery), the ability to quickly move men one from part of the line to another is crucial to prevent breakthroughs. Without mobility on the defensive side, it's just that much easier for the enemy to overwhelm one part of the line. And armored mobility helps a lot in cutting down on casualties during those movements.
- As the war goes on, we're likely to see the quality of gear for Russian troops to polarize even further. As the current vehicles break down or get destroyed, the favored troops will be getting modern vehicles fresh off the production lines as replacements, often better stuff than they currently have, while less fortunate troops will be handed increasingly old and rusty stuff as Russia simultaneously keeps digging deeper into it's stockpiles to make up for the fact that the rate of new production is nowhere near the rate of vehicles lost.
- "Russia has a large modern military, but the modern part ain't large and the large part ain't modern." That's just very well put.

Its sad the Germans don't learn either. After getting screwed with Russia because of geopolitical issues, they go right on and start strengthening economic ties with China despite the ongoing risks w/ Taiwan. I really don't get it.

Angela Merkel? She was 10 times worse then Scholz ever was and signed on to Nord Stream 2 after Crimea happened and defended the deal months before the war. Even so far as stated she has no regrets on how she managed the energy policy despite hindsight
"In this respect, I do not regret decisions at all, rather, I believe that it was right from the perspective of the time," she said, adding that cheap Russian gas had allowed Germany to push ahead with phasing out nuclear and coal.
She almost singlehandedly put Germany in the stone ages with her hate for all things nuclear and shifted Germany's energy dependence towards Russia and renewab- err coal. All because she had an epiphany the day after Fukushima.
She was one of the biggest contributors to why Russia thought it could get away with invading Ukraine, and expected Crimea-like sanctions.

I saw this, but haven't had time to watch it.
thanks for reminding me

As this grinds on the gulf between the two militaries wearing Russian colors will widen. There will be the have (a small number) and have not (a larger number) units.

I read an article on this yesterday, made me chuckle a bit, don’t we only have like 20-30 leopards to begin with? Granted it’s not like we ever use them so they might as well get put to good use.

And I’d be interested in knowing the combat readiness of those tanks.
I believe they are all Afghan vets

We bought 80 2A4s and 20 2A6s, how many are actually in working and how long it would take to get them all battle ready is up for debate. Germans have more in storage and parts than we actually bought and shipping them from there is easier, but those won't be "ready" in time for a spring offensive.

You guys were discussing tank transfer and training time the other day and it reminded me of whats going on here in Trumplahoma.....
Quote:
One day after it was announced that Ukrainian troops would begin training at an Army post in Oklahoma, an Oklahoma state senator is trying to put a stop to that plan.
Luckily the party has rejected his stance. But just a reminder of how backwards conservatives are in this whole thing...

It's amazing that the party of Ronald "Tear Down This Wall" Reagan has gone full bottom-bitch for Russia and Putin
Anytime I hear a Republican speak, all I can think of is how they love Putin and the old Soviet Union. I'm sure that is the look that they were going for.

That's the exact line of thinking that led us to have to borrow tanks from the Germans and then panic buy more to supplement and/or replace the borrowed ones after we sent our troops to Afghanistan without the proper equipment. Any well-equipped infantry force requires heavy machinery -including MBTs - to support it. Otherwise it's just people with guns.
If we are going to ask people to fight for our country, we have a responsibility to make sure they can do so effectively. As much as I agree with Canada giving support to Ukraine, (and I agree with it very strongly) it can not be to the detriment of our own armed forces.
