Let me clarify, I'm not saying it is acceptable in the US either, but their freedom of speech allows it, ours doesn't.

I never said they weren't allowed.
I said to me it's absolutely disgusting the stuff the Phelps family does. To protest during the funerals of the VT victims is disgusting IMO. Shows no decency whatsoever.

This is what I posted earlier:

So if people couldn't get any dumber and idiotic..........

One family(The Phelps who are very famous in the USA for all the wrong reasons) are going to the funerals of the victims who died and the candlelight ceremonies and are gonna be protesting at the funerals etc of the victims. Why you ask? The site below provides the information. Alot of people at VT have become aware of this and are rightfully p*ssed. I don't understand how we have so many tools on this planet.

Warning: The site is controversial.......(as you can tell by the name).
http://www.godhatesamerica.com/
Below is a video of "America's most hated family". They are the ones who run the website I posted above and who will be protesting at the funerals of the victims of the Virginia Tech shooting. They are very well known in the US for all their controversial ways. Personally, they disgust me 100%.

Phelps and his followers do this sort of thing regularly, the more we pay attention to it, the more viable they feel. I'd just laugh and move on.

Freedom of speech isn't an unlimited right. Society/the Law place limitations on exactly how 'free' we are to say things. I personally think picketing at a funeral (whether its the VT victims or Saddam Hussein) is uncalled for. Picket somewhere else, there are people trying to grieve at a funeral.

The united states does have a very wide concept of Freedom of speech, but unlike Canada they don't really have a lot of verbal hate laws, so Phelps is essentially protected as long as his protests don't become physical or violent.
I was reading through his website this morning while I was having coffee, and he's a odd contradiction.

He hates the homosexual lifestyle. and bases his whole church around that. Yet he condemned the killers of a young homsexual murder victim.

He hates racial discrimination and preaches against Slavery.

Was very much a fan of Saddam Hussein until he was hung.

The funniest thing is that the KKK protests against him and hands out anti phelps literature. When your hated by the clan and your a zealot focus of hatred theres something thats just not right there.

He's trying to turn their grief into anger... and it'll likely work for some people. Some will likely get angry at him, but some will hear his message and get angry at whoever he's trying to get them angry at. Either way, it's disgusting.

Since his life is all about provocation and confrontation, someone is going to kill him in a fit of rage . . . .
It's like road rage . . . . he'll get out of his vehicle on the wrong person one day.

If you look at the way this church survives financially, its through both the incomes of its 90 members, and the fee's collected by his civil rights law firm, so the more people that he can sue the better.

He was disbarred a few years ago but his daughter continues to practice after a 6 month suspension of her law license.

True. It is too often an excuse for jerks who don't seem to be raised to show respect and restraint. I may be in minority, but I would sacrifice a little bit of freedom of speech for freedom of harassment and intmidation when they contradict each other.

I hope that he gets his ass handed to him by a family member of the deceased at a funeral he is demonstrating and I hope they get acquitted on the basis of severe emotional distress caused by Phelps' agitation during their time of grief.

I scrape things off the soles of my shoes that I hold in higher regard than Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church.

Fred Phelps is the sole reason that I feel that there needs to be a lot more "cowboy justice" dished out in this world. Someone deserves a beating? Give it to them!

Freedom of speech isn't unlimited, but only in instances where
you trample on others rights of freedom and liberty.

Just because you and I find this particular instance of picketing at
a funeral disgusting does not mean that we should attack our freedoms.

Harrassment and intimidation are already addressed by our laws,
depending on the situation. There is no need to curtail our freedoms
over it.

I know a few Patriot Guard riders that have gone to funerals where Phelps and his clowns were picketing, to shield the families from the protesting.

I'll send an email...maybe the guys in Virginia could show up for this.

can't help but feel that when someone essentially starts a religion (or izes a religion) based heavily on one thing it's because of some insecurity or some underlying personality "fault". In this case the obvious outrage over homosexuality. Wonder how many skeletons this Phelps guy has in his closet in that regard.....
And to be clear I'm not saying homosexuality is a personality fault. Just saying that's what some people are raised to believed and when they start to have such thoughts or experiences they sort of go off the deep end.

Of course I'm sure he can go to some camp for a few weeks and get "cured"....

You think that anyone has ever gone to one of those "Straightening out camps" that they talk to about pretending to be gay.
I mean there's got to be strippers and loose camp councilers there to encourage the "straightening out" process.

Except they want the death penalty for all homosexuals.

Guess they just want to be the ones to do the killing. That would be alright because they would do it in (their) God's name.

If you were one of he families of the VT victims, I wonder what the legal ramifications would be if you ran into one of these nuts and gave him a beat down? I mean, what judge is going to convict you when it's 2 days after a loved one was killed, and some jack ass is in your face telling you it's your fault they died, and it's gods way of punishing America because you love "fags and dykes"?
It would take me about 1/3 of a second before I knocked someones teeth in.

It's ok to have your beliefs, but don't cross the line when it comes to expressing them.
