But the counterpoint would be that McCarthy is a failure. As minority leader he 'led' the GOP to the worst midterm performance from an opposing party in recent memory. It was supposed to be a red wave taking over the country. Instead they barely won the house. And he wants to be Speaker now? Maybe the 20 never-McCarthy crazies have a point. They have the balance of power and they think all members would rally around Jordan. McCarthy would bring more failure.

Because Republican policies are deeply unpopular with a great deal of Americans, and the striking down of Roe v. Wade was seen as a Republican "victory" which also did not make them popular.

You can pin that on McCarthy if you want, but a good deal of the unpopularity of the Republican party has come from the Never-McCarthy nutbars who also happen to be proponents of Trump and The Big Lie. Hell, Boebert won re-election in 2022 by just 546 votes, when just two years prior she won by 26,512. That's the smallest margin of victory in the entire time the GOP has held that District, since at least 2011.

There are actually some interesting things happening from a few of the concessions that is essentially pulling an inordinate amount of power away from positions like the speaker and giving more power to individual members. It seems like they might not understand that those rules don’t only apply to them and everyone, including democrats, will be able to use them. The other things they want are stupid things like Biden investigations and stuff that’s a bunch of who cares anyways. They’re either gonna waste their time or, if they do find shady stuff, then good. Shady stuff is bad regardless.

These people really don’t understand how badly they’re screwing then selves right now. This is genuinely fascinating to me.

Is there a reason there can’t be 3 parties? I’ve heard people says it’s because it’s a republic and not a parliament, but what does that matter?

Republicans want their own Pelosi. Someone revered and reviled on the internet; likely reviled on CP. McCarthy isn't her.

9 no's already for McCarthy, 12th vote incoming.

Speaker voting record is starting to look more like a football score.

There are far more than 3 parties. I'd love it if there were zero parties and everyone were independent.

12th vote has begun. Bishop, Brecheen, Cloud and Clyde have all flipped to McCarthy.

EDIT: Donalds, Luna, Miller, Norman, Perry and Roy too. It won't get him to 218, but at least 10 flips this round is a ton of progress for him.

At the core of the emerging deal is the reinstatement of a House rule that would allow a single lawmaker to make a motion to “vacate the chair,” essentially calling a vote to oust the speaker. McCarthy had resisted allowing it, because it had been held over the head of past Republican Speaker John Boehner, chasing him to early retirement.

Other wins for the holdouts include provisions in the proposed deal to expand the number of seats available on the House Rules Committee, to mandate 72 hours for bills to be posted before votes and to promise to try for a constitutional amendment that would impose federal limits on the number of terms a person could serve in the House and Senate.

yeah some of those make sense. But lowering the vacate the chair threshold to a single member is a killer for any speaker.

^ given that Brian Fitzpatrick was the only Republican to attend the January 6 ceremony today, I'd guess the number of "moderate" Republicans in the house is pretty low these days. Not that I want to know what an arsonist like Gaetz would consider "moderate" ...
