"How can anyone support this disgusting human being, his records are tarnished"
*Ovechkin changes Instagram profile picture*
"Well there we go, now that's settled let's go Ovi! Get that record!"
Anyway, barring injury I bet he gets the record in November of the 2024-2025 season.

When you don't like what someone has to say, accuse the person of virtue signalling (even when he isn't) and a double standard (even when there isn't one).
Nobody knows Ovi's motivations and history, and that's the problem with labelling him in any way. It's well documented his brother was killed. Was it by a rival party which is why he liked Putin? Who knows? Was Putin as dangerous 10 years ago compared to now? Probably moreso now. Would it create nationwide headlines if he just changed his picture? Probably. Would it put his family and those around him in harms way at the mere suggestion he's no longer supporting Putin? Perhaps.
I do believe people should stand up to human rights issues but who are we from the outside to understand the risk he may be taking in what seems to us like a small gesture? If anything, Putin has shown he wipes out people against him. If a high profile person does the same I'd wager there's a target on him. He's been silent and has said he doesn't want war. Read into that what you will. While hockey is just a sport, I'm hoping he breaks that record handily.

Making comments in public or on social media that demonstrates one's good character or social conscience is the literal definition of virtue signaling. I didn't make the definition. And I would say that changing your opinion because someone did something completely irrelevant like changing a profile picture is exagerrated and insincere, but thats just my opinion.

Or when you don't like what someone doesn't say or doesn't say strongly enough for your liking, vociferously accuse them of being a horrible person

I have to laugh at Gretzky's competition back in the day. I know he's the greatest of all time and certainly his edgework and passing were undoubtedly great but goaltending was in it's infancy at best, equipment was smaller, defenceman were smoking in intermissions, and the sport was treated as hobby by ownership and it cascaded down. Maybe this isn't the thread for this debate but today's players skills have gone up dramatically.

No it isn't.

That's not what I did. My opinion on this whole Ovi thing changed when I found out about not only his instagram photo but also his history of cozying up to Putin.
Look, I hold no ill-will toward Ovechkin and I don't begrudge anyone who cheers for his success.
But if he passes Gretzky, Putin benefits. That's why I can't cheer for him to get the record.

Please quote where I ever called him such a thing.

I never read your posts and was never referring to you nor anyone specifically, but the fact that you think I was speaks volumes IMO. I was gonna say something about people wanting to ban him specifically from Canada when there's 48 active Russian players but went with the Instagram profile pic reference instead.
And yes, that is the definition of virtue signalling.
I'm not going to derail the topic any further, and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but this is a topic about an exceptional hockey player chasing a record, that's it. If people wanna talk about him as a person there's other place to do so. IMO.

It isn't. But that's cool, I won't talk anymore in here about Putin or politics. Carry on.

Copied and pasted from the first result when you Google virtue signaliing definition.
"The public expression of opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character or social conscience or the moral correctness of one's position on a particular issue"
But carry on.
