There's a video on CNN taken by a guy with a cell-phone that shows police officers approaching the sound of gunshots. It's horrifying to hear one shot, then two, then four more, then a pause, then another. Makes me sick.

One person was killed and others were wounded at multiple locations inside a dormitory about 7:15 a.m., Flinchum said. Two hours later, another shooting at Norris Hall, the engineering science and mechanics building, resulted in multiple casualties, the university reported

What I don’t understand is how can some walk into a dorm shoot and kill someone while, wounding others and commit the same act 2 hours later? Couldn’t someone have stopped the second attack especially if there was only one shooter?

The Oklahoma City Bombing was actually on the 19th too. I know because my first niece was born on that very day in 95 just hours after it happened.

I'm curious on how this happened two hours after a previous shooting. Did they not put the school into lockdown immediately after the first shooting? If they did, was the shooter locked in with other students unknowingly to anyone or did he somehow gain access to a building in lockdown? If they didn't go to lockdown, then how come?
I'm sure this will be a big question in the media... especially once Nancy Grace get's a hold of this.

VA Tech is something like 100 buildings over 2000 acres. It would take quite a while to search out a well prepared shooter.
While I have never been in such a situation, and sincerely hope I never am, I am always left wondering why one persion couldnt have just jumped the guy and ended the rampage much sooner. It is amazing how fear can absolutely paralyze a person.

Because it never works, especially if the killer is using either an automatic weapon or a pistol.
If your dealing with a guy with a gun and you don't have one, and you decide to rush him, your likely going to die since that person has already made the decision to kill people, and in mass.
When I was in the military, we played out an un armed man attacking an armed man, and 9 times out of 10, the unarmed man was dead before he got within 10 feet no matter what the element of of surprise is.
The other scenario was the armed man against the crowd of approaching unarmed people, and for the most part you usually got the armed person, after he emptied his magazine killing 30 or more people.
Best thing you can do in that situation is find a place to hole up that has more then one entry points nearby, and hope that he dosen't see you.

I would imagine they figured it to be an isolated incident after the first shooting. Only one person, one building.

Seperate buildings a long ways apart.
the first incident from what i can gather seemed completely isolated and overwith.
Then......bam, the guy went ballistic elsewhere.

Well they could have stopped him if they had armed security guards.
Unless the security guards had a mix up in the first place, which is what happened according to some sketchy reports.

According to the CBC article posted above the security guards on campus are armed.
Craig Nesslor, an associate dean at the school, said campus security personnel are armed and there are loudspeakers around the campus used to broadcast emergency messages — including in this case. He said the broadcast told students to seek shelter because of a shooting.
http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2007/0...ch-070416.html
So a mix-up scenario seems rather plausible.

Events like this really put other things (like hockey playoffs) in perspective. Yes, hockey is a passion; but it is not life or death.
I hope all the survivors can recover from both the physical and mental damage that has occurred.

My thoughts are with all the survivors. I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to experience something like this.
