In the 30 days that Phillips can be up with the Flames before having to go through waivers, Flames play 15 games. Phillips can only play in 9 (10?) if they want an option to sent him down after his stint.
So there is no need for him to play in every game, he can and is expected to sit some. It is better for him to get 29 days up with the Flames and 9 games in, than lets say 20 days up with the same number of games

Hmmmm I would think they would've made a Phillips/defenceman swap yesterday if they were going to do it.

I think they will keep him up for at least this game. We have 6 D with Weegar playing for Tanev.

On another note, I'm not too worried about the goalie battle. Markstrom is rounding into form, and the Vancouver goalies have been very average this season.

I don't understand why they wouldn't play Phillips. He's been fine, and makes the pp more dangerous. This team is frustrating.

It's what it is. Darryl doesn't trust him and it's just not good strategy to have a line you don't use.
That said, Ritchie doesn't look close to 100% right now and really struggled against Montreal. So I dunno.

I know this is true but I always think of the player having to go back and forth somewhere and how much that must suck.
Even though he doesn't physically have to go anywhere, my mind envisions some grand, strenuous travel.

Philips is learning the NHL game, pace of play etc. He will get more chances and hopefully be able to play more than 8-9 minutes a night as well.

It's hardly a bad thing that he's scratched for a game or two as long as he comes back in with more in his toolkit the next time.

This. He gets to sit and watch games and continue to practice with the team as he gets used to the NHL game.

I'd love for him to play every game, but as a young player that hasn't consistently played in the NHL yet, nothing wrong with a reset and continue to let the coaches help him develop his game.

Exactly. Handle him the same way they did Ruzicka which seems to have worked.

Yeah, Phillips didn't hurt anything but he didn't really help anything.
Let's hope for less dumb penalties this game

I'm not up to speed with the Tanev situation.
Are we worried this is a long-term concussion possibility?

Or are we cautiously optimistic that he'll be back relatively soon?

I hope he takes time off. Hrudey said he was already playing through an injury and that shot hit a bad spot. Maybe see him in the new year.

Ruzicka's only coach was been Darryl Sutter, correct?

Darryl replaced Ward mid season in the 20/21 (really just 2021) season, did he not? When you look things up, some sites show Sutter as being the Flames coach for that entire season but I distinctly remember Ward being fired and Sutter being hired, but the Flames had to play 2 or 3 games without Sutter behind the bench due to Covid Protocols. There seems to be some weird tracking of this. hockeydb is the main site I go to to quickly loop up stats but it is very inaccurate in this case. There are other sites that don't credit Ward as being coach at all during that season though....

Anyway, Sutter handled Ruzicka properly it seems. Perhaps he knows what he's doing and will help Phillips along too? ... I still remain skeptical on Phillips as an NHL regular though.
