In fairness, Morocco was a complete wildcard. Switched managers, changed players, swapped styles. I fully acknowledge not giving them the credit they deserve, but now that we can see what they can do?

Nobody sane wants to play Morocco.
In the second half Canada looked as dangerous against Morocco as Spain did. We had Morocco on their heels there and were inches away from tying it up. Couple that with the Belgium performance (and maybe a penalty or two we could have been awarded) and I say Canada maybe didn't look too bad, just didn't get any results. Obviously the team looked good to start against Croatia too but that didn't persist very long!

Our home country has plenty of ugly too. Even with respect to migrant workers we should probably not forget the estimated 4000+ Chinese immigrants who died building the national railroad across Canada.

Quote:
Between 1880 and 1885, 17,000 men emigrated from China, most from the province of Kwangtung (Guangdong). By some estimates, more than 4,000 workers died during the construction. In addition to facing racist discrimination, the immigrants were often given the most dangerous jobs in the already dangerous task of blasting through the Rocky Mountains to lay the Western section of the track. Many were killed by landslides, cave-ins, disease, and explosions. Despite the high risk involved in their work, Chinese were paid half as much as other workers.

The Chinese Railroad Workers Memorial in Toronto was erected to commemorate the contribution and sacrifice of these workers, who remained nameless in the history of Canada. After the railroad was complete, many of the immigrants who survived could not find new jobs. As a plaque on the memorial reads: “With no means of going back to China when their labour was no longer needed, thousands drifted in near destitution along the completed track.”
https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/...rkers-memorial

I expect no one passes the history test very well, and our righteous indignation should probably be limited significantly.

This isn't a history test. It's a contemporary test. Doing a history test is quite ridiculous. Events from 150 years ago are not relevant to what is happening today in the context of calling out current evil being perpetrated by countries.

Are we already forgetting the warmongering and bloodshed of King Henry IV? Or Edward I? SMH.

SMH indeed.

Eh, I'm going to have to go with Boston.

Anyway, as far as England goes, they played a pretty good tourney and lost to a very good team. I'm sure the second penalty miss will be a sore spot but they don't really have anything to be ashamed of, IMO.

The problem with England is the coach. Since Russia, everyone has felt they had so much more to offer, but Southgate holds them back. He’s a coward.

How in gods name do a professional coach see what’s happening on the pitch in the 60th minute, look at historically deep bench, and say nah I’m good with this.

Herdman and Southgate should change places and im being dead serious. Herdman would love to let those horses run. And honestly Canada could use a bit more structure, caution and experience.

I'm not sure Herdman is a great tactician either. He's good at motivating a never before successful team with some hokey quotes but got them to believe. I don't think that's what a power like England needs.

The coach England should be after is Pochettino.

Yes. He should have pulled the trigger on Foden earlier but I wouldn't say he is a huge problem holding them back.

You can look at that yet you fail to mention how he got Mbappe spot on when all else had failed. He had France on the back foot.

It's easy to say put Herman in charge and let the horses run but who's covering Mbappe, Dembele et al whilst they're out running? It's not that simple.

Tactically with the exception of his late subs he got things spot on. He shut down Mbappe et al without compromising his attack. You can see that the players want to play for him and, imo one of the most underrated aspects of management..... his man management skills seem second to none. Just listen to his players. They want him back. They want to play for him.

England didn't play bad against the best team in the world. If anything I'd consider them very unlucky to go out on a ballooned penalty and a buffoon of a ref.

Easy to say get rid of Southgate. But for who? Certainly not Herdman.

Lots of videos coming out now showing the Dutch players mocking and disrupting Argentine penalty takers as they went towards the spot; particularly Martinez on the last penalty.

Weghorst follows him halfway down from the centre line to the box.
Not surprised they got some taunting after the win and Messi calling him a fool.
Don't poke the goat.

What on Earth is happening? I heard about the first guy but not the circumstances, are these people dying under mysterious circumstances? Is it a lack of advanced care being offered to them? What's the deal here?

Maybe they opted for the full migrant worker experience tour package.

Apparently Britain is cautioning their citizens returning from Qatar to monitor for symptoms caused from the MERS virus, which causes respiratory problems. Transmission rates are low, but it does kill up to a third of the people who get it. Contact with camels and camel products are common ways it is spread and a lot of the tourists have been taking camel rides and consuming camel products, which are common in Qatar.

oh... if this comes over and becomes a big issue (would have to become more contagious than it is now)... we are screwed.

Fair enough, they shutdown Mbappe and played great. The fact remains the result is disappointing, and many people were clamoring (not just in hindsight) that it was time to make changes at the hour mark.

Surely England supporters are not satisfied that they simply played well?
