Nope, not likely. Like others have said, he likely would have easily broken it without lockouts, but thems the breaks.

He’s on pace for 44 this year.

If that holds, he’ll be 70 away going into to next year.

I think it’s absolutely within grasp. 35/ year for the next two years. Or 23.5/ year for the next 3. He’s 37

I stopped cheering for Ovi when it was shown he was a buddy of Putin - one of the world's biggest criminals of the current millenium.

Have I missed a change in Ovi?

No. His legacy is certainly tarnished.

But the goal scoring is still something to marvel at. Didn't think we'd ever see a player with 800 goals after Gordie and Wayne, yet here we are days or weeks away from seeing it again.

And probably for the last time.

He's not committed any crimes and none of the politics matter to me in regards to his legacy. Tom Brady kept a MAGA hat in his locker but it has no bearing on his legacy.

We discussed this a bunch last year.

IMO he grew up in a bubble and largely continues to live in a bubble. It would be nice if he had his world view challenged more, but we've seen how effective the Russian propaganda machine is with various stories of relatives living in Russia disbelieving first-hand accounts from their own relatives living in Ukraine.

I cringe every time I see his "Stanley Cup Champions" commercial. NHL should be embarrassed.

Ovi now trailing Wayne by 99.

Did a quick check and it took Wayne 6+ seasons to get those final 99 goals.

I would be surprised if it would take Ovi more than 246 games (3 seasons) to get there as his one-timer is still deadly.

99 goals in 246 games = ,4 goals/game
Career numbers are at ,61goals/game

I'd guess around feb 2025 vs the no Goods in Deadmonton. That would be something!

Really hope he doesn't hit the mark in his career for War reasons. Amazing how he is getting sports washed.. but that's just me. Why does he get a pass?

He has lived in the US for his entire adult life. Ovechkin is at least as much an American by now as he is Russian.

He'd already be knocking on the door if not for Covid and 2 lockouts over some of the best years of this career.

Crazy to think he might have flirted with 1000 goals if not for all those missed games.

By my count, he most likely would have had around 45 goals in 2004-05 (which would have been his actual rookie season),
22 more in 2012-13 and 19 more in 2020-21 and therefore only 13 behind.

Record would have been tied in Vegas and then beaten at home against Sid the kid end of January....and then Sid looks at the camera and says

Instead we will have to wait another couple of years!

Disagree 1000%

Your heart is where it is, and his heart isn't being American.. and he's not an American citizen. His heart and soul is with Putin and Putin's Russia. Period.. he is "Z" and if the Caps PR wasn't led by a Fellow Putin bootlicker we'd hear more about it.

I was born a dual citizen and I identify more as an American just based on my family upbringing (Raised by American father) and where my heart lies. 26 years in Canada versus 13 years living in the United States, where I will live the rest of my life. So no, time doesn't equal allegiance and I guarantee you once Ovechkin's career is over he's back to Russia.

This has been discussed so much already but it just annoys me seeing TSN, Sportsnet, literally EVERYONE acting cool about it and "Sportswashing" his position w/ Putin. #PUTINTEAM, etc

I grew up with a huge pride in my RUSSIAN heritage too, now it's a disgrace to a point, even though my ancestors ran away from Russia due to war and persecution. Pavel Bure was my favorite player as a kid, Valeri Bure made me a Flames fan when he was traded from MTL.

I won't be celebrating any of this guys goals.. and I don't think the media should either.

I wouldn’t count on it being such sure thing that he reaches Gretzky’s record. Time has a way of catching up quickly at his age. Brett Hull is a similar type of player- in the 02/03 season he had 37 goals. In 03/04 he had 25. After the lock out year he played 5 games and got 0 goals and 1 assist, so retired because he couldn’t play at the level he expected.

This is cool and it's your right to not cheering for anyone, but saying the media shouldn't is a bit much. You don't like his political view, that's fine. May be not everyone should drag politic into anything and everything. OV did not kill or rape anyone. He is quite a charitable person. Helped put 7 orphanages in Russia. Does it not count because they are in Russia not in USA? He also help raised $40,000 for charities including Meals on Wheels, No Kid Hungry, America’s Food Fund, World Central Kitchen, and Feeding America. He also through a partnership with the NHL equipment company CCM, is helping pledging to donate a total of 500,000 masks to healthcare workers.

He openly supported Putin, so what? Because of this all his other good works are all for not? No one is saying he should be awarded the Man of the decade award. People are just cheering on for him to break a HOCKEY record. Stop dragging politic into it.

It's not politics when it's life and death.. a literal genocide of Ukrainian people for absolutely no reason. I'd respect him if he took the Panarian approach versus the middling he's been doing.

You make it sound like his actions have any bearing on the situation. It's 100% politics you are bringing into this.
