To state he is selfish because he has family? He gave the ultimate sacrifice for others to be able to survive and may have saved a number of lives by fighting in Ukraine.

We wear a poppy on Nov 11 to remember the ultimate sacrifices of soldiers who fought to preserve our values, many across continents and many with families as well. Lest we forget.
Absolute best post made in this thread by a mile. Not sure why the distinction was made between a "job" (Canadian military) and serving to save people with military experience, a few posts up, as we are all humans.

But either way, just fantastic perspective, glad you posted that.

I can see both sides of the argument frankly, but I will say that every one of my foster kids has had absentee fathers, dead or just gone and probably all of them would have probably felt more at peace with their world if they had a father who had died serving either Canada or in Ukraine

Many people probably thought the same thing about the second world war. But in hindsight, without the willingness of the men of nations untouched by battle to die (Canada, Aus, India, US to an extent) the Allies don’t win.

This Canadian man felt the need to go and join the active fight against tyranny. What he felt you don’t feel, and that’s ok. But to call him out for it is not right, whatever word you choose to use.

Yeah I get it too, I had the same thought when I saw his young daughter. But at the same time, he's a soldier, this is who he is. He could've passed away in Afghanistan as well, I wouldn't call that selfish either.

If he was a civilian accountant or something, who just decided he had to go over there and fight, that's a different story. But this is who he is, it's a soldier's life. I'm sure his wife knew the risks that entail marrying a soldier, and something like this was always a possibility, as horribly tragic as it is. She knows who she married. I see no fault in his decision, given that. RIP

Also, I like how that conversation concluded, good on you guys

It wasn't fantastic at all. It was simplistic and lacked empathy or understanding of another perspective.

If you work in the Canadian military there are support systems - and life insurance - in place for your relatives in the event of your passing. I'd be surprised if he'd have left his family with that kind of support after his passing as a mercenary. To not see the difference between being a soldier for the CAF and being a mercenary in a foreign conflict is absurd (as it relates to your responsibilities as a father).

And then - in usual Firebot form - he proclaims he'll wear a poppy on November 11 as though Hemi-Cuda and I are flapping around trying to encourage people to not wear poppies or not support our veterans.

Jayswin - Firebot's posts are terrible and this one is no exception. There are always little insinuations (like the poppy thing) that paint the posters he's replying to in a negative light by altering their meaning through his replies. Throws in a "Lest we forget" for the insta-thankses as though you have Hemi-Cuda and I over here forgetting about the sacrifices our literal grandparents made. Well, I shouldn't speak for Hemi-Cuda, but I have family who fought in WWI and WWII including a great uncle who never came back and a grandfather who spent time in a Japanese prison camp.

Guys - two things can simultaneously be true: This deceased soldier did a selfless thing by fighting for Ukraine against Russian aggression and he can be selfish for leaving his family and risking his life in spite of having a dependent. We should all be able to understand both perspectives instead of acting like donkeys who only see the world in black and white.

Having said that - I think I may have read somewhere this was not even his daughter? Is that possible? Maybe she has a real father? That would change my perspective a lot. My posts until now have been based on a belief that she was his daughter and I think others have been posting from that perspective as well.

My mom's dad lied about his age and joined the Canadian military at 16 in 1939, served in Europe for the entire duration of the war and fought in the battle of Caen. My dad's dad was in the US Navy and was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked. Sadly one died before I was born and the other died when I was a kid, so I never got to talk to them about their experiences

Agreed, while losing a step parent is still really ####ty it makes a big difference if her real dad is still in the picture

Sounds like the Russia evacuation from Kherson is going as well as expected. Some units only informed of the withdrawal in the last few hours. Upwards of 20,000 trapped on the north side of the river and Ukraine is raining down everything they have on the evacuation points.

Great post. To me too, it's the ultimate sacrifice, and selflessness.

I'll add to it, that many parental figures are involved with careers that have a significant risk element, similarly to the military. Does one patronize their livelihoods too, when they are a casualty of their careers? (Police, Derrick hands, Fishermen, Loggers, etc )

You've made 9 straight posts ranting about how selfish a soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice for a cause he believes in, the day before Remembrance Day no less.

Your other previous 9 posts were literally spent ranting about me and how I pollute this thread (and you can include your latest post to make that 10). All either naming me or directed at me, I rile you up so much apparently that you focused an entire series of post on me including the last one.

Posts that I mostly ignored I might add as I prefer to focus on updates and discussion of the war and your posts offer no value to this thread.

On the bolded, you're now contorting yourself by trying to find if a dead father's daughter may or may not be biologically tied to him to affirm some twisted logic and failing miserably. You seriously went to search this? To win back some brownie points on the internet that you feel you lost with your recent posts and unpopular opinion? Back away and think how ridiculous you sound for a sec. Take your lumps and move on.

Your posts speak for themselves, I don't need to insinuate anything about your posts.

Your obsession over me is getting a little creepy by the way.
