If he correct it next time then we probably know how it should be said. The league or team will often follow-up with a commentator if they are getting it wrong.
(or even family members of the player - I got yelled at in the parking lot by the Uncle of a Roughnecks player once).
Sometimes it's a mental block even if you know correct way.
There was a guy in the NLL with the last name Macnamara
I knew it was MAC-nah-MARE-AH
but I couldn't get past saying Mac-NAM-AHH-RAH.
There's also an art to writing phonetically and often what the leagues provide aren't helpful.
And I will add there's nothing that bothers PBP guys more than getting a name wrong. It's embarrassing.

However, I am also fairly certain that there are posters and readers of this forum who will use something like this specifically to fuel an existing racially motivated dislike for Singh and his playcall. There are viewers of HNIC who are repulsed because Singh is Sikh, and his choice of pronunciation of Kadri's name lends to that repulsion. And for that reason, maybe it is actually important that he keeps doing it. Maybe this is an instance in which his culturally motivated choice is the right one, in spite of its technical inaccuracy, or even its cringe-factor.
That is good to know, thanks.

I think there' some truth to this. I also think its very interesting that we are now in a time where we are talking about a Punjabi Canadian commentator's pronunciation of the Flames best player's name, who is a Lebanese Canadian. That in itself is kind of amazing to think about, in terms of where this country is culturally. Its a great thing. I feel like all Canadians with good intentions are trying hard to operate in the right way with the multiplicity of ethnicities and cultures we deal with every day, and Singh is doing that as well.
I would offer a couple more points on the topic, from my perspective.
a) I'm not sure intentionally mispronouncing something because racists exist is the way to combat them. Who cares what they think anyways. I don't think they get a voice in this discussion, I'd rather have it with well intentioned people that are just interested in navigating these issues properly and with consideration for their fellow human beings.
b) It could bother me a little bit because perhaps I feel Singh using the accent to say Kadri almost becomes a bit of a caricature of what a Punjabi canadian should sound like. I don't speak like that, and I'm quite sure in most contexts Singh doesn't either. He speaks very fluent english. Most people that have the accents are people with english as a second language. And there's nothing wrong with that -- but plenty of Punjabi people you will come across, speak perfectly fine english and don't throw accents on top of things randomly.
I do agree its largely a non issue though, but it obviously has captured some interest, given the thread. I had a good chuckle about it when I first heard it. Not going to impact my viewing of Flames games at all, and I like Singh and what he brings to the broadcasts.

It is something that Singh is clearly intensely proud of, and unless this was something particularly bothersome to Kadri, I don't see the problem. Singh is distinguishing himself in a business in which he is a trailblazer. It is going to rub some people the wrong way, but good for him for blazing that trail; I personally think he is doing a great job.

I guess my only question to this is why doesn't he roll every players 'r' in the same manner then?

I think Singh just really likes Kadri as a player. Guy is fun to watch.

Wouldn't that be wonderful? But the sad truth is that racists are going to get a voice in this discussion whether or not we are even aware of it. And, while I agree with you that mispronouncing Kadri's name is not the way to combat racists, I am also quite confident that succumbing to outside pressures for Singh to stop is also not any better, and probably worse.

Yeah, I also wondered about that. It could come across as pandering or pretentious, which is why I think Singh's motivations are such an important aspect of what is going on. Let me ask you this: Would your feelings change if you knew that Singh mispronounces Kadri's name as an homage to one of his favourite players, and that Kadri is personally honoured by it? For all we know, this is all purely just between the two of them.

Yeah I have no doubts Singh loves Kadri and I actually like the rest of his PBP and energy overall but just doing it for one person just sticks out like a sore thumb.

Those are muddy waters but this is interesting exercise. I have Asian heritage. What would the discussion be if I was the national play by play guy a few years ago and I kept saying "Jalome Iginra!" everytime he touched the puck because I am such a big fan of him and I'm putting my own twist on it. I'm sure it would annoy a lot of people too and I would not fault them for being annoyed. It is easy to slip into that caricature territory.

I suppose it would, seems like a strange homage, but sure. I guess my thing is it just seems kind of unnecessary for Singh to do. But whatever, he's free to speak as he wishes, I'll get used to it.

So, my name is super boring and does not ever sound cool. But if someone could make it sound cool in a different accent I would be all over that.

Ha ha, my mom still has trouble with Ls and Rs, my wife's name is Laura and that's a very hard name for Koreans to pronounce.

The homage theory would make a lot more sense if he only pronounced it that way on goal calls. Saying it like that every time has just made people wonder if that's the actual Lebanese pronunciation.
And if it's just a thing between the two of them, it's more like an inside joke than an homage. Paying homage is more like calling Barkov "Sasha".

And put it on a randomizer so that it switches it up to random languages at random intervals.
Lets really spice hockey up!

When I got annoyed at the Canadian broadcast team, I used to just switch the feed to the American/Away one last year when there were more working streaming "options".
Now with ReSpeacher AI fully working for James Earl Jones, I want a Darth Vader setting for hockey games.

I'm here for it.
"I find your lack of offence....disturbing."
I wanted to get Majel Barret's voice to be the voice for my GPS.

This manifests in all sorts of silly ways. My own surname is a relatively common English word, but people want to spell it as if I were German.
My adoptive family is Norwegian if you go back far enough, but they've been using the English spelling for centuries – and the Norwegian spelling isn't anything like the German, either.
Some people prefer it if you say or spell a name wrong because you don't want to sound pedantic. Some people like it if you are pedantic for the sake of getting it right. But if you're going to be both pedantic and wrong, the least you can expect is to be laughed at.
