Markstrom is supposed to play that puck, Sutter even said so...he just has to make a better play and knock it down

What pisses me off with Markstrom out of his net is he's not improving with his puck play. Burned him in the playoffs last year, badly, and it's burning him again this year.
Tend. The. Goal.
Keep your focus, keep your position, and that's that. Weak rim play and slightly dodgy puck handling behind the net... he's not good at it.
I thought he played okay in terms of stopping shots, but do I trust Markstrom? At this point, no, he doesn't seem capable of focusing and making good decisions for a whole game. And in the playoffs last year, it cost... that one game he floated out of the net like 18 seconds into the game and totally gaffed it, and got scored on. Can't happen.
I am not of the "Flames win that game for sure if Vladar starts" camp... I thought Marky made some good saves. But I kinda do believe that the Flames would have won it with Vladar in.

I was at the game, thought Markstrom played great. Missed that shot on the rim around but %$#% happens. Way too many Coiler fans there, annoying as hell

It's game 7 of the season, team hadn't played in days, I thought it was entertaining and fun. Rather Flames win but I'm not going to judge the team when they are still finding themselves and they have played one road game this season. Markstrom played good and thought Lindholm and Huberdeau came close a couple times probably their best game together.

Agreed. I’d rather see Markstrom let one in like that then the Oilers putting pucks right through him all night.
As for top line issues we are 5 and 2 out playing our opponents every night. This team is doing something right so some need to relax. It always sucks losing to the Oilers but it’s 1 game in October

The boys didn't look very sharp. It's early in the season and they haven't played in a few days. I'm not overly concerned.

Markstrom played down to or worse than Smith that entire series. Not the same situation as last night where Skinner didn't let in his own softie.

Markstrom was fine last night, he had two go in off of traffic and had no chance and then got extremely unlucky on a puck rim.
It happens.
1. He has to miss it
2. No Flame can come back to get it if he doesn't
3. Puck has to land perfectly on McDavid's stick
Happens.
I didn't love Markstrom against Edmonton last spring either but how are we just ignoring a Vezina caliber season with nine shut outs and a first round playoff series where he had to backstop his team when they couldn't score on the other guy.
He seems like a scapegoat for some to me. Way over the top.

Are you inferring they aren't a good team?
Good teams don't win every close game.

It is the same situation. Just like the goal on Markstrom it tied the game but with plenty of time left. You're saying bad goals deflate teams. It didn't deflate the Oilers. And Smith wasn't exactly playing like a Conn Smythe candidate so you could trust him to shut it down the rest of the game.
That was game 4 in the playoffs. Lose that and the series is 2-2 and the Flames take back home ice. This game 7 of an 82 game season where you're 5-1 not 1-5.

No, I'm saying they should have still been able to find a way to take the lead back. I don't buy the deflated argument. Especially game 7 of the season.

Except that he didn't seem that way at all last night. He played a really solid game. The McDavid goal was unlucky, and he probably shouldn't have tried to stop the rim around, but it had absolutely nothing to do with him being rattled.

Not worried about our top line, they'll figure it out. Markstrom vs Edmonton however, is a long enough sample to be of serious concern.
Frankly, I don't expect it to get better.
The Flames path to success is avoiding Edmonton in the playoffs. Doesn't matter if we're the better team, I don't want this match up.

This is a loser mentality and I guarantee you there isn't a player in the room that shares it.

So what exactly are you saying?
They didn't try?
They're not very good?
Because teams don't win 82 games and come back from every ounce of adversity through a season.
None of them do.
The Flames kept the Oilers at bay 5 on 5, and stayed out of the penalty box for the most part (would argue two of the three penalties were undeserved).
Just didn't get the bounces.

Yup. The Flames dominated possession. But their finish wasn't there. Which isn't a surprise as they had only played one game in the last 7 days.

You are ignoring the context. Smith let a brutal goal in a series where both goalies were brutal. The idea of getting a goal back in that series seemed easily achievable. The game last night was tight, with Skinner not allowing his own weak goals.
Markstrom sure gets the benefit of the doubt on these boards. When he has a good save percentage it's all him and not the team, when he has a bad save percentage it's all the team and not him.
He has been letting in lots of bad goals. This is not a one off for him. He's struggling. Unless we think a 903 save percentage is good enough.

I'm saying I don't buy the they were deflated because of the goal so they get a pass arguement. They had plenty of time to get the goal back but couldn't.
They are a good team and yes they were trying. I do think they missed the net way too much and too many of their shots were right at Skinner.

Change the goalie coach then you isolate the variable if it’s that or if it’s mental.

they weren't deflated
they competed, but couldn't get a goal, it happens
no need to try and conclude they are flawed, try to maintain some perspective

Knew we wouldn't be going 82-0, if asked what ~20 games I wanted too lose it wouldn't be an easy choice (obviously none against the Oilers) but I'm not setting the whole thing on fire every time we drop one cause this team will deliver the 60+ wins we need to get into the playoffs.
