Yup...our office is just off of Memorial an the lot is quite busy. Didn't stop some jackass from cutting off the cats and a guy that had his truck for less then a month....in broad daylight.

Does the valuable metal in these get used up over time? I drive a 2006 so I am hoping the crackheads know that the palladium or whatever is in there is likely all burnt up by now.

Older vehicles normally have more of the precious metals. I had my 2003 outlander cat stolen from outside my office in Crescent heights it was an insurance nightmare for 2 months.

Had two of my work trucks have their CAT's stolen last June.

Dodge Ram 3500 - $10000


It took a month to even source the parts needed for full repair. When they cut them out it messes up all the sensors, and takes forever to get it configured.


All told it was a 2 month nightmare just to get the trucks back on the road.

This is the part that angers me the most. The cat was stolen from my 2003 winter beater when I was parked outside my MIL's house last winter. Straight piping it would be cheap and easy, but two O2 sensors needed to be replaced as a result of missing cat. Even with just a straight pipe, it cost way more in time, parts, and effort to get it back on the road than the car was worth.

It would have been better for everyone if they had just stolen the entire car.

Hopefully there's a special place in hell for cat thieves

We were lucky when our cat was stolen. The Econoline vans have pre cats tucked up and out of the way. They got the big one but with the pre cats we were able to replace the cat with a resonator and the pre cats do enough to keep the o2 sensors happy. As a bonus we got a 10% boost in fuel economy. At $300 installed, we'll have the resonator paid off in no time.

My only regret is not cutting the cat out sooner and being able to sell it myself.

We took our van to Calgary Muffler and they said they install resonators on all the city fleet vehicles that have their cats stolen.

Also unbelievable the city would be so irresponsible and should be illegal for shops to do.

It’s already illegal for thieves to remove cats from vehicles they don’t own, how’s that working out for you?

Irrelevant to what I'm saying and failing to understand the point you're trying to make. Most people have their stolen cats replaced so that their vehicle doesn't unnecessarily pollute more than it needs to. I'm saying it should be illegal for a muffler shop to alter a vehicle to knowingly make it pollute more. Not a hard concept.

It's all fun and games until acid rain comes back... Catalytic converters are pretty useful. Every time I see a post about this people always jump in to straight pipe it with the cheating o2 sensors.

We still have 2 cats, just not the third one. It doesn't trigger the O2 sensors so the existing converters are getting the job done.

We made the decision because we had no safe place to park the vehicle - replacing catalytic converters annually isn't very green either.

Where can one find one of those after market protective plates to help make it harder to steal? Have a large gas guzzlin suv/truck with two pipes.

A catalytic converter on a modern vehicle can run in the $1,500 - $2,000 range, and many vehicles with two banks of cylinders run one cat per bank, so double the cost if they nick both of them. Contrast that with paying someone $130 to weld in an O2 spacer and a couple lengths of straight pipe, of course people are going to do that.

As for those 'protective plates', depending on the solution it might be misplaced peace-of-mind as most of them I've seen online can get cut out with the same sawzall or whatever they're using to cut the cats out in the first place.

I think like most theft prevention, it's trying to make it take more time and draw more attention so they'll just hit the next truck on the street instead.

That happened to be, I posted in the automotive thread. My cat-less motorhome got broken into at the auto center. Damaged door and ignition. Cost me another $500

But I'm on the hook but it was my choice to leave it there. I could have driven it home and back.

Happened to a company Hino back in December...total cost was almost 20k, and took months to get fixed.
