Has anyone heard of these DVB cards, they have the capability of turning your computer into a full fledged sattelite reciever with PVR functions. They come in two flavors; software driven, and the more pricey but easier to use hardware driven version. The software driven version of these cards are amazingly inexpensive, about a fraction of what a standalone reciever would cost, and they can decode HDTV signals too!!

This technology has been out for sometime now, but I've just discovered it now and want to share with everyone.

Basically a DvB card has the ability to Decode almost any sattelite feed you can think of. It can decode both Dishnet, and Bell expressVu's signal both of which are encoded by Nagra Vision. DirecTv and Starchoice would be the notable exceptions because they encrypt there signals differently. The main advantages of DvB cards and recievers over your regular provider issued recievers are that they operate totally Camless (no access card needed), This means your not susceptible to those dreaded ECM's. Another cool feature is you can recieve up to 4 signals at once, if anyone asks why you have so many dishes just tell them your working for SETI.

The only negative point I can think of is it's a bit more complicated to get setup.

That also means that there are no subscription fees, correct? I think that's probably a pretty big advantage.

I have a fortec star dvb reciever that sits above my t.v.

It was very easy to adapt it to get Dish and BEV.

I chose this set up because all you have to do is transfer the software from your home computer to the reciever via a cable, than set it up.

I did not want watch tv on my computer, and the set up was a lillte bit more involved.

good luck

You point at what you want to get.

I have a couple of fixed dishes. For this set up I have a dish for DISH and one for BEV.

There is no menu or guide that works with this set up. However you can d/l channels lists.

You will get the hang of it once you have it.

(EX channel 11 may be a channel 500 PPV movie acording to the dish guide.)

Yeah I was considering the FTA setup as well but they are bit exspensive, and I did'nt like the idea of no onsreen guide either. The setup of an FTA reciever from what I understand is very similar to that of DvB cards. Websites like Sattech.ca are very informative, they have complete step by step guides for any setup you can think of.

Another downside of Dvb cards is you may have to pay for the GUI software like MyTheatre. In my opinion it's worth the money because you can download pluggins that give an onscreen guide very similar to that of a 6000 series reciever.

Bottom line if you have a nice PC, and your not intimidated by the idea of opening up your computer case, the DvB solution might be for you. I should point out that even if you had an old PII 300 your're still able to use the DvB card with onboard decoding. Add a 60 dollar video card with T.V. out, and you could have a very affordable HTPC.

This posted on a DSS forum

"Dish and Bell are both sending out a major ECM which is in progress as we speak, all you will see on your tv is a black screen.

They have changed the speed of the way their datastream rolls the access keys, therefore the Atmegas and Free to Air receivers just won't be up for maybe a few days until new patches are developed...

Also will hit the Rom 3 and 10,s"

I wonder if the DVB cards are still up, I can't access any of the DSS sites to get info. Apparently FTA recievers are down too so I suspect the same for DVB cards. I sure hope there not switching to the Nagra2 stream so quickly.

There is never a stable solution for "testers", the companies know all about the FTAs and the DVBs, and they are always working to defeat them.

Of course people are always working to crack them, so it's a neverending war.. but anyone who tests has to know that a ) there will always be down time and b ) testing can sometimes cost as much as a sub.

Sucks to hear that hAh, Apparently they were targeting FTA recievers with this round of ECMs , they got everyone else as well. From what I hear It's not that serious though, just wait for a flash. As for my atmega setup I gonna try reloading it and changing the blackout string which should do the trick.
