Icon55 Sabres extend D Mattias Samuelsson (7 x $4.29M)

@reporterchris

Fascinating extension for #sabres defenceman Mattias Samuelsson: Seven years at $4.29M AAV.

He's played 54 career NHL games.

I've never seen him play. Can't say I even remember hearing of him. He must have off the charts advanced stats because his regular stat line is underwhelming for a person who just signed that contract.

He hasn’t even scored a goal yet. Not sure if I’ve ever seen a contract like that for someone who hadn’t done really anything yet. Strange.

this feels like a real stretch. Imagine if we had signed Valimaki to a deal like this

Strange. It seems that the cap savings you might have in years 4-7 are erased by the overpayment in years 1-3 (assuming he develops into a top 2 defenseman).

I guess the Sabres are hoping to be contenders by then when the cap savings can be helpful to them, but seems like a weird risk for Adams to take.

It's Buffalo. Maybe it will work out for them or maybe it's another mistake by an organization that has made many over the last decade. It's hard to give them the benefit of the doubt given recent history.

this is almost certainly the largest contract given out for a player who hasn't scored a goal at the NHL level

Buffalo has been ####ing up league contract standards for more than a decade now. Remember the whole Briere f-show? Then the Skinner anchor? This is likely to follow.

I suppose it could turn out, but it just seems like such a wild unforced error. Good for this fellow to guarantee a successful life for himself.

Edit: NVM i had the briere one mixed up, it was philly that gave him a lunatic contract to steal him away from buffalo. Still.

Yeah if you get a few of these right you are golden, but a slip or two and you really set the franchise back.

Juuso Valimaki was certainly looking like a sure fire top four defenseman after that Avalanche series. Could have been a huge mistake.

The Flames took less of a gamble on guys like Lindholm, Hanifin and Andersson.

Yeah, 54 games on a bad team with no particular structure is not enough of a sample to make a bet that big. That's insane. Of course it might still pay off because who knows, but that's not a bet any GM should be willing to make.

Samuelsson is awesome, lots of crack judgments from people who have never even heard of him let alone watched a Sabres game lol. This will be a good deal.

This contract has equal chances of being good and terrible.

We are paying Chris Tanev 4.5M as a UFA and he is one of the premiere "defense-only" defensemen in the entire NHL. Would Samuelsson really have commanded that much more after a bridge deal?

Seems like an unnecessary risk to maybe save a few 100k 3 or 4 years from now.

It is all about making a judgement on such a small sample size. Rasmus seems like a decent example of betting on upside, and he had more than 150 games when he signed his contract. This is on half a season.

Andersson in Calgary had played about 130 games I believe when he signed a similar deal. Reaction around the league was mostly "who's this guy?"

Feels like a similar situation here

Ras played 160 games plus 15 playoff games.

So he had more than 3x the amount of games. Still a bit of an unknown and even some of us here felt it was a bit of a risk, but there was a lot more certainty to Andersson's contract than Samuelsson's.

It’s risky, but he’s young and has shown promise. The cap hit isn’t that bad either. It honestly could be worse and the pay-off could be big

What was the rush to sign him to this amount? Were they going to lose him?
