Had an idea!

Like do they think its not toxic because rape and sexual assault is okay? I'm really confused.
I mean they literally paid out money to get rid of problems, and they think that isn't a big problem?
I really wonder how deep this goes. Their arrogance makes it seem like they think they have internal support from some pretty big players.

"There have been allegations that the leadership group is incompetent, and possibly corrupt. So the leadership group looked into these allegations, and it has determined that it in fact, not incompetent nor corrupt. In fact, we think we're pretty awesome. So, bugger off and leave us alone."

Did anyone else catch the part about how they’ve been buying themselves championship rings worth tens of thousands of dollars over the years? There might have been other self appointed gifts but I didn’t catch the whole segment.
I think it was on ctv news. Honestly it’s not just the sexual assault and secret slush funds. Hockey Canada is rotten to the core with corruption and scandal.

And routine board dinners of over 5k.
So stupidly corrupt but obviously peanuts next to the rape and sexual assault cover ups. There must be more skeletons in the closet though.

What is stopping the a few community associations like Bow Valley, Crowfoot, McKnight, Simons Valley etc from getting together and just breaking away from HC and starting a non-affiliated league?
Does HC actually provide much funding to them? It seems the opposite is true where these associations have to pay money to HC.

No they don't give them funding directly. More like support for training coaches and staff, possibly some grassroots stuff. I think HC provides insurance for the organizations, so the players and coaches/volunteers are covered. At least that was what my national federation did when I ran a non-profit sports association.
I would think it would be similar. Also, HC would host major tournaments obviously. But direct funding to individual players? no, all registered athletes in hockey across Canada who are members in that province would have to pay HC. It is a lot of money annually that should be stripped until HC can get their act together.

One of my buddies is president or maybe past-pres of our Minor Hockey Association. I'm gonna ask him what HC actually does for them next time I see him.

Maybe these guys were right to split off.
Not sure if they are affiliated with HC at all.

The biggest thing you will see with those other community associations breaking off will be registered officials. I'm hoping that all of the refs associations can come together and find a way through this as well to help the kids while separating ourselves from Hockey Canada without hurting our chances for national/international assignments

A national organization, to oversee and coordinate, is a must. It just needs to be cleansed and rebuilt

It would be interesting to see how the HSL league does it, maybe worth a look/poke around their website linked above. That is an interesting point, I wasn't thinking about but I would assume HC does support refs/linesman/score keepers, etc as well, another service they provide, but I know there is a lot of the same behaviour in that world as well. I know a few WHL refs/linesman and they struggle unless they "know" someone.

I get what you are saying. But what do you expect the organization to do to avoid issues in the future. I think everyone knows that rape is against the law. But there are still sexual assualts and rapes. Do you think if new leaders are put in place that all sexual assualts and rapes in the world will stop?
I doubt that will happen.
I think the only thing I would change would be to let the legal system deal with the perpetrators rather than sheltering them. Guessing they were being sheltered because the victims included hockey canada in subsequent legal action. They were probably trying to minimize potential payouts.
I highly doubt the current leadership is saying rape away.

I used to think that too. But what is the point?
Seems that league that UCB linked to that is not affiliated with Hockey Canada is doing OK. If they were terrible, nobody would join it.

They’re obviously not. The problem is they refuse to fully diagnose the problem of group sex initiation culture in the sport, especially at higher levels.
Additionally, they seem to believe that the situationally blind and tone deaf people who enabled the problem should remain in their positions to clean it up.
They fooled everyone by letting people believe they actually addressed the problem of the Graham James in the sport.
No one is getting fooled again.
The reality is that the Graham James of this world can’t blend in to the background if the culture doesn’t normalize abusive and controlling sexual practices with a code of silence.

Unfortunately they would. Many of the private leagues are know for being shady AF. They’re basically for profit businesses that prey on gullible parents.

The existence of an independent organization does not prove that the national organization isn't required.
There are still things like standards, national teams, funding, etc

It’s just political theatre and character assassination at this point.
Nitpicking an association for supplying championship rings. Give me a break.

No it’s not.
Players rings, absolutely. Volunteered staff. Sure.
Executives (how many?) who are already paid by a public nonprofit organization.
No thanks.
They made their mess, they can sit in it.
