I feel like the last bit of roster tinkering Tree has left to do hinges on the Weegar extension.
I think he made a couple of glaring mistakes in big moments that fans tend to over-focus on.

Elliotte Friedman had a very brief comment on the Weegar negotiations on the most recent 32 thoughts. He just said both sides are taking a run at it, and that it’s quiet right now.

That's exactly what I want to hear, to me that is almost a guarantee that a deal is done before the season, probably arm wrestling over number of years.

I'd be more worried if it was a Gaudreau/Tkachuck situation with agents near training camp giving a "okay we're done and our player is focusing on the season, we'll begin negotiations on the off season" type statements that really say "we're basically done here and want to see what our player can get on the open market.

I would hope the plan is still to trade him if he doesn't sign.

Oh I am sure you don't want Weegar on the Flames.

TJ Brodie made more than a few mistakes when he was here but I'd take him back in an instant.

Is it just me or is anyone else longing for a little more insight into the Weegar extension or lack therof. Surely there is someone that can leak a little more out there?

Weegar is simply looking to get paid top dollar and can't blame the guy, he's been underpaid for the last three years big time. And this is his last chance to cash in.

I think both sides likely want and will get a deal done before the season starts. But both sides are also going for top/bottom dollar.

People were over the top stupid about Brodie. I have no idea why

A puck chipped toward him at the blue line hits a rut, skips up, and gets past him, and the GT went insane. A random hop that happens to anyone - not a big deal, but Brodie? Somehow it was the sky falling

I came away with the impression that a lot of folks in the GTs at that time ever played hockey. It was a place for… something different

Fact is, Gio was a Norris calibre D when he was paired with a guy he could trust like Brodie. The with or without you performance of Gio *should* tell you almost all you need to know.

But that is just the way it was. I am sure that you will have no trouble finding someone to say he was no good or some such nonsense

I am sure it isn't. Weegar is here at minimum to make the team better now. Whether he signs an extension ahead of TC or not, he will play the season in Calgary.

Exactly this.

This team just spent a 1st round pick to trade a 27 year old centre with one year left on his deal to be able to sign a 32 year centre to improve the 22/23 roster. The Flames are focused on the now.

Brodie has played on some damn good teams, and only made it out of the first round 1 out of 6 playoff appearances. If you're not a part of the solution your a part of the problem. A great player, but he has yet to make a difference at the dance.

Wasn't Brodie usually our best dman in the playoffs?

The Flames have won 1 rd since he left. TOR hadn't won anything before him, either...

Lol he has been gone for two years

Brodie is decent, he would be in the bottom pair on the current D though

I recall him being pretty steady especially the year Gio was injured and missed the playoffs. He was always a good defenseman but he had a few really rough stretches (I don't think Gulutzan did him any favors and he didn't pair well with Hamonic) where he struggled mightily but he's become pretty steady defensively in his later years.

And he clearly wasn't part of the 'problem'
