For all those complaining, do you really think there were better deals that were turned down???? What else did you guys expect to happen? And even if you have some hypothetical move of Lucic instead of Monahan, it could be argued Lucic brings more this season. So you are giving up the current for a slightly less painful return in 2-4 years???? And said return won't be in the NHL for like 5-7 years????
|
I'm not a complainer, but it's fair to question this combo of deals, and whether moving Monny was necessary immediately or at all.
I'm not worried about the back half of Kadri's deal...I'm more worried about the front. How many rough/tough players remain really effective (and healthy) into their mid 30s?
Ultimately I'm okay with it as I think this team needs time to figure itself out from day 1 of training camp, and this is the very best year of this window for many reasons, and I don't see many viable alternatives at this point.

Giving up a first round pick to be able to sign a 31 year old to a seven year deal? Madness.

Madness?
Hyperbole!

So here's the thing: we have a great team now, but we're going to have to pay a 38 year old $7M, seven years from now.
So as fans, we can be happy that we have a great team now, or we can choose to be concerned about something 7 years away.
Personally, I am focused on the former.

Unlikely since if the cap space wasn’t tied up into Lucic it would likely be tied into some other player. Too much time between those deals to just say the cap saved by Neal would be available for Kadri.

I'm not sure if it's madness, but yeah there's questionmarks
I mean sure, Kadri is a good player, I like adding him to the team, but he's a been a 45-55 point guy for the last four seasons before 21-22 and his previous career high was 61 points. Odds say that's much more likely to be his production going forward.
Thia could very easily be another Neal.

So you think there's a chance Kadri completely falls off a cliff, gets less than 30 points per year for the next 3 seasons then gets bought out? Because that's what happened to James Neal. Nonsense.
Even if Kadri only gets 60 points this season that would be 4 less than Neal got in his last 4 seasons combined.

Kadri does a lot more off the puck than Neal ever did. Kadri has speed, grit, and defensive awareness. Even if he doesn’t get 70-80 points, he is still going to contribute.

That doesn't suit Itse's narrative, some I'm afraid your analysis is wrong because Itse said so.

And Lucic finds other ways to contribute too, but that's still a terrible contract.
I don't hate the deal, but I still expect him to be seriously overpaid for about five of those years.
I get it, Treliving is all in to make a deep run now, and I respect that for once he seems to be on a clear course.

I think it is fair to have doubts about the term of the contract. But I think, at worst, Kadri will be an overpaid Backlund type player - maybe a 3rd line centre who is able to play shut down hockey. Lucic and Kadri don’t have any similarities other than your perception that he’ll eventually be overpaid. Even your comparison to Neal was closer and it was still a million miles away.
Kadri is an older version of a Tkachuk type player but with more grit, more defense, and more speed. Plus he’s a centre. Do I think we’ll love the last couple of years on the deal? Not really. I actually don’t think Florida is going to like the last few years of the deal for Tkachuk either and he’s a lot younger.

The contract was specifically written up to be easier to buy out. Stop worrying about 4 years from now. Treliving isn’t.

Putting cap hits aside, Lucic is the more important player towards a playoff run. This was the right move, IMO.

Never more than 82 pts with Gaudreau, but 90 pts with Caufield, post hip surgery
